News Update for Saturday October 29th, 2011

Melodicrock.com's Andrew McNiece secures Steve Perry exclusive interview

Yes, the man behind the excellent www.melodicrock.com website, Andrew McNiece has succeeded after 15 years of trying, in getting an interview with former Journey lead vocalist, the dare I say, legendary ... Steve Perry.

This has been - not only for Andrew - probably the most sought after interview in melodic rock circles, there has been in years.
Not since VH1 Classic's Behind The Music, has anyone secured as detailed an interview as Andrew has.

Since Perry left Journey, he's released two solo albums in 'Street Talk' that featured the mega hit 'Oh Sherrie' and a second - my preferred - album 'For The Love Of Strange Medicine,' that for many fans of the band, was considered the album Journey should've made after 'Raised on Radio.'
Classy stuff indeed.

Anyway, enough of my thoughts, find out what Steve Perry thinks of Journey today, what he's been doing and what he plans to do next, right now over at:

New York, NY (October 26, 2011) — Eagle Rock Entertainment celebrates the life of Jeff Healey (1966-2008) with the November 1 release of Full Circle: The Live Anthology, a beautifully packaged boxed set containing three CDs and one DVD.

Tommy Denander – Guitar and keyboards (Radio Active / Alice Cooper )
Neil Murray – Bass (Whitesnake, Gary Moore)
Gregg Bisonette – Drums (Dave Lee Roth, Ringo Starr)

On backing vocals: Billy Trudel and Kristoffer Lagerström

Produced and Mixed by: Mike Slamer
Co-Produced by: Tommy Denander
Mastered by: Christoph Stickel at MSM-Studios Germany

Chris Ousey’s career goes from strength to strength. His first main achievement was with Polygram recording artists "Monroe" with guitarist Gary Sharpe, but Chris never made it to the album as he was snatched in the pre-production stages by John Bonham's son, Jason, for his new band of the moment, Virginia Wolf.
The band notched up 250,000 album sales between two records in the form of their self titled debut (produced by Queen's Roger Taylor) and "Push" (produced by Keith Olsen).

Most will associate Chris with the band “Heartland” which was actually formed by Chris with Gary Sharpe and their self titled debut on A & M Records in the early nineties was produced by James "Jimbo" Barton. Since then Chris has notched up 10 releases with Heartland, and recently “Best of .." (ESM221) is a great reminder of the work he has done over the years.

Nicknamed by the press as “The Man with the Golden Tonsils” Chris has always been loved by the rock audience, simply because of his amazing voice and his uncanny vocal range. So, for the first time we have a solo album from the man himself, and are we all in for a treat. Produced by none other than the famous Mike Slamer, “Rhyme and Reason” is a superb slice of melodic hard rock that will have you singing every chorus after the first spin. Songs Like “Mother of Invention” (available as a Digital download on 5th October) and “The Reason Why” are two great examples of songs from the album, but there is not one single weak track here. Chris has a knack of writing great lyrics and with Tommy Denander writing the music then it is a match made in heaven….and just wait till you hear the collaboration of two great guitarists Mike Slamer and Tommy Denander and the combination is just pure magical!!

Rhyme and Reason is a great album and highlights just how Chris has matured over the last two decades.

And finally ....

I just thought I'd share this, because between these bands, there is a massive amount of talent ...
If you live in the UK and this event is happening close to you, go on, treat yourself ... I'm sure you'll have a great night!

Nils Lofgren To Release "Old School" On Tuesday, November 1st

First full studio album in five years features such music icons as
Lou Gramm, Sam Moore and Paul Rodgers
Listen to "Ain't Too Many Of Us Left"

It's been five years since the release of Nils Lofgren's last studio album featuring his own songs and, with his forthcoming release titled, Old School, he's got something to say.

An effort that's been in the works since the culmination of (Bruce) Springsteen's Working on a Dream Tour in November of 2009, Lofgren's Old School covers a variety of topics including desperation, self-doubt, true love, departed friends, holding on to your dreams and the world gone mad... along with a tribute to the late, great Ray Charles.

"These songs reflect characters with some radical feelings and beliefs," states the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lofgren. "They're definitely thought-provoking."

The CD -- due out on Tuesday, November 1st -- will be his eighth studio release on Vision Music, the label also responsible for 2008's The Loner - Nils Sings Neil (an homage to Neil Young, whom Nils started his career with over four decades ago) and 2006's Sacred Weapon.

"Old School has many different types of songs and feels... some rough, bluesy tracks to haunting acoustic songs," continues Lofgren. "There's some interesting and controversial characters in these songs and I look forward to everyone's reaction."

The album starts off with the controversial title track, "Old School," which features former Foreigner lead singer Lou Gramm.

"our spineless Congress should all be fired
get some women and men
with balls and sense hired
child rape and murder
one strike and you're down and out
with our kid's lives at stake what's to figure out
oh no ain't no old school anymore..."

It's not for the timid.

Old School features a total of a dozen songs (see below for track listing), all produced by Nils with the exception of the song, "Why Me," which was produced, recorded and mixed by Brian Christian (Alice Cooper/KISS/The Babys fame).

The song, "Amy Joan Blues" features legendary vocalist Paul Rodgers while the cut, "Ain't Too Many Of Us Left," features Rock Hall of Fame inductee Sam Moore from the popular sixties duo Sam & Dave.

Sam Moore comments about the collaboration, "It hit me when I was in the studio with Nils that we've lost so many of our friends, peers and colleagues in the past few years... The Big Man, Billy Preston, Wilson Pickett, George Harrison, Solomon Burke, Johnny Cash, Isaac Hayes. It hit me how true it is that there 'ain't too many of us left.' I was flattered and honored that Nils asked me to join him to pay a little honor and remind everyone in some way to remember our dear but departed friends and loved ones."

"Ain't Too Many Of Us Left" has been made available as a free download at www.nilslofgren.com for fans to enjoy and the entire CD can be pre-ordered on the site as well.

Also appearing on Old School is the song, "Irish Angel" (written by the great Bruce McCabe) that Nils has been singing for years at his acoustic shows along with a ballad Nils wrote with an old friend and great DC-area artist, Root Boy Slim, called, "Let Her Get Away."

"I've always wanted to share that particular song but never got it together until now," says Nils. "Sadly, Root Boy's not with us any longer, but I know there are fans out there that will appreciate this touching, haunted country-type ballad of ours."

Speaking of old friends near and dear... Old School is dedicated to Nils' dear friend and band mate, Clarence "Big Man" Clemons.

As an integral member of the Bruce Sprngsteen's E Street Band since 1984, Nils has remained consistently busy as part of the group, and as a solo artist.

In addition to songwriting and performing, Nils also devotes substantial time to his online guitar school (http://www.nilslofgren.com/Lessons07.html), which has garnered tremendous response from guitar players all over the world. Beginner lessons are offered in English, Spanish and Italian...

In early September, Nils released "When You Are Loved" (via free download on his site), a 9-11 song that honors heroes, victims and families.
Beginning today, Nils hits the road for a few dates (Link to full itinerary below) to talk up the album and have some fun.

He'll travel from town-to-town, playing his favorite songs in intimate venues, talking to friends and fans... something he's enjoyed for 43 years now.

Call it "Old School."

Stuart Smith provides Heaven and Earth project update

I had the pleasure of catching up with British guitarist Stuart Smith, who these days resides in LA, to find out what is happening with him and the excellent Heaven and Earth project that has so far produced two excellent albums.

Heaven and Earth Featuring Stuart SmithWindows to the World

For the past three years or so, Stuart Smith has been a part of Steve Priest's version of The Sweet, who incidentally on Wednesday night played at L.A.'s Key Club for a CD launch party for the recently reissued / remastered and expanded version of The Sweet 'Live in America.'
Asking Stuart how it went, 'Alun, it went great, it really did! We had a lot of fun there, as did the crowd I'd say, but I'm feeling it now!' (Laughing)
Sweet have been playing select dates across North America through the Summer as well as dates down in South America.

So what next I asked?
'Some dates in Canada and then I have secured studio time to get the Heaven and Earth band recording again.
We have some really great material, I'm so happy with the songs, I really am. You wait 'til you hear them!'
Stuart told me the line up will be some familiar names to people that have followed the Heaven and Earth band activities.
Joining Stuart, who will of course be handling guitars and no doubt some vocal duties, will be:
Joe Retta - Vocals
Richie Onori - Drums
Chuck Wright - Bass
Arlan Schierbaum - Keyboards.

Anticipate a release date I'd imagine around Spring time 2012.
Looking forward to it Stuart!

Brief Update for Wednesday 26th October, 2011

Hi folks,
I know many of you who surf many rock websites, may well have seen some of the same info I'm plugging, but with all the stuff going on in the day job and playing catch up, every now and then I realise that I should've posted something else I stumble on through my inbox, that slipped through my clutches at the time, so I'm sorry if you're thinking, 'I thought I read that last week?' Chances are, you probably did, but somewhere else! LOL! :)
Anyway once again, thanks for sticking with me folks, this site is a labour of love - If frustrating at times due to Blogger's formatting .. Grrr! - and I really appreciate your support.
Have a great rest of the week, cheers, Al

Chickenfoot premieres new video for "Three and a Half Letters"

To coincide with the UK release of Chickenfoot’s highly anticipated second album “III” (Oct 24th - Yes, just this week!) and the recent announcement of two UK concerts in January 2012, this week the band have released a new video for the single “Three and a Half Letters”. Watch the video right here:

Featuring guitar hero Joe Satriani, former Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony, and drummer Chad Smith; “Three and a Half Letters is the second single to be taken from the band’s new album. The song’s poignant lyrics tackle the world’s economy and current levels of unemployment. The lyrics are taken directly from letters written to Sammy Hagar, following a suggestion from his long standing manager, Carter, who sadly passed away earlier this year during the recording of the new album.

“I've received letters from lots of people, mostly fans, but some people just needing help, looking for work,” says Hagar. “Carter had told me to write a song called ‘I Need a Job’ six months prior but the idea didn't dawn on me until I received a letter from a guy who had just returned from Afghanistan. At the end of his letter he wrote – ‘Can you help? I need a job’."

Watch a podcast of the band talking about “Three and a half Letters” here: http://youtu.be/w8An5z6q5bE

Chickenfoot will perform two UK concerts in January 2012 as part of a 5-date European tour; dates include Manchester Academy (Jan 12) and London’s O2 Academy Brixton on (Jan 14), followed by concerts in Paris, Tilburg and Dusseldorf. These are the band’s first European shows since July 2009, and will see them perform songs from their gold-selling eponymous debut album, alongside tracks from the new album ‘III’. Tickets are available from:

Read the press release for the new album here.

At this time the band has indeed only announced just five US tour dates.
It seems they are still testing the ground right now, so these shows are clearly pretty exclusive!

Rest of Europe - 31st October, 2011

‘Immortal Soul’ sees TONY MOORE, MARK REALE, DON VAN STAVERN and BOBBY JARZOMBEK – the line-up responsible for the band’s hugely acclaimed ‘Thundersteel’ (1988) and ‘The Privilege Of Power’ (1990) albums – re-united once more, together with MIKE FLYNTZ who as the additional live guitarist helped bring these two acclaimed albums to life on stage.

RIOT are justifiably proud of their upcoming release. As bassist DON VAN STAVERN says: “‘Immortal Soul’ picks up where ‘Thundersteel’ left off, 20 years later! It has the same intensity, creativeness and passion that we put into our music. It’s another ball buster and I can’t wait to unleash it on the masses.”

Guitarist MIKE FLYNTZ is equally as enthusiastic. “I have been performing the songs from the ‘Thundersteel’ era for over 21 years. It has been an honour to write and record ‘Immortal Soul’ with Tony, Don, Bobby, and Mark. I am very proud of my contribution to this record and also very proud to play along with such inspirational musicians. I hope everyone enjoys this album as much as I do.”

For drummer BOBBY JARZOMBEK, “‘Immortal Soul’ is a special record for me because in all the years that I’ve been playing and recording various projects, I’ve never been completely involved in any other CD from the very first day of writing, to the very last day of mixing. I’m really looking forward to the live shows, and including some new ‘Immortal Soul’ songs into the set along with the Riot classics!”

Founding member and guitarist MARK REALE, who has been RIOT’s guiding force since the band released ‘Rock City’ over thirty years ago, is quick to pay tribute to vocalist TONY MOORE’s input. “To me, the close collaboration with each of our vocalists has always been the decisive aspect in any RIOT release. That’s why it was absolutely inspiring for me at the studio that Tony directly took up many of my ideas and translated them brilliantly, or contributed his own suggestions from which our songs benefited greatly. He is simply the perfect RIOT frontman!”

And as TONY MOORE himself points out, “It’s been nearly a quarter of a century since the five of us assembled in New York to create ‘Thundersteel’ and ‘The Privilege Of Power’, and the music world couldn’t be more different.'

'The internet led us not only to discover that those albums had taken a special place in the history of metal, but also put us back in touch – and the result is ‘Immortal Soul’, an album that is 100% true to the legacy of those 1980s recordings. It’s also packed with evidence of how we’ve all grown and changed as artists. It was recorded in five studios, in three different cities, and it’s absolutely a product of the most important changes in the recording industry over the last 20 years. We’re looking forward to sharing the details with our fans and friends around the world, along with the music. Enjoy!”

The band also has a promo video for new song, 'Wings Are For Angels' that can be viewed right here:

If you haven't heard of Alan Parsons, you have certainly heard his work.
Starting out as an assistant engineer in the world-famous Abbey Road Studios, Parsons' first projects were assisting on the last two albums recorded by The Beatles,  but it's his work as the engineer on Pink Floyd's, "The Dark Side of the Moon" is what put Parsons on the map, with the band crediting him as an important contributor to the album.

The fact that Alan Parsons was involved with those classic releases, really just scratches the surface, on a man that has produced some absolute gems with his own Alan Parsons Project.

Join us for an intimate conversation with Nic Harcourt as Parsons discuses his lengthy career, and what led him to produce the DVD series, 'Art and Science of Sound Recording', that gives away the production secrets that have made him a legendary producer and engineer.

The Billboard Legend Of Live Award honors groups or individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to live music and the touring business, and acknowledges the recipients' commitment to the art of performing live and reaching fans through the concert experience. Previous award recipients include Rush (2010), Ozzy Osbourne (2009), The Allman Brothers Band (2008), pioneering agent Frank Barsalona (2007), Sir Elton John (2006), Cellar Door Concerts founder Jack Boyle (2005), and promoter Michael Cohl (2004).

Journey has created some of the best-known songs in modern music, contributing to their status as one of America's most popular rock bands. They continue to tour and record into the 21st Century, and have never stopped creating vital music since their inception in 1973. The 2011 "Eclipse Tour" has been one of their most successful ever, touring the world with the lineup of Neal Schon (guitars, backing vocals), Jonathan Cain (keyboards, backing vocals), Ross Valory (bass, backing vocals), Deen Castronovo (drums, percussion, backing vocals) and Arnel Pineda (lead vocals).

Despite owning a history marked with multi-platinum albums and massive radio hits across decades, Journey remains a hugely successful touring band, having moved nearly one million tickets and averaging more than $600,000 a night at the box office.

"I'm so honored to come to New York to represent the band for all the years and dedication that everyone's given," says Neal Schon of the band being named the 2011 Legend of Live.
"Though they have sold millions of records and charted a wealth of the most beloved Billboard hits in history, most would agree that Journey's longevity has in large part been driven by their stellar live performances," says Ray Waddell, Billboard's Executive Director of Content and Programming for Touring and Live Entertainment. "From their days blowing up the Bay Area music scene, to their ascent to international headlining and, today, iconic rock status, withstanding personnel changes that would bring down a lesser band, Journey's talent transcends musical trends and draws bigger crowds year after year. In short, Journey personifies a Legend Of Live."
The Billboard Touring Awards honor the industry's top artists, venues and professionals for the year, based on actual data compiled through the Billboard Boxscore chart. This awards reception culminates the two-day Billboard Touring Conference, presented by ShowClix, taking place at Roosevelt Hotel in New York City on November 9-10. The conference unites today's top touring professionals to discuss the current state of the industry. Guided by Ray Waddell, this unique event includes provocative panels, productive roundtables and networking opportunities with touring industry power players and decision makers.

Saga news update

... And no, I'm not talking about holidays for old folks! - UK rock fans will no doubt get that one!

Canadian pompsters Saga or call them what you will, AOR Prog, Prog melodic rock, but for most it's pretty much something like that, have a news update at their website, that the now returned frontman Michael Sadler has shared with fans there.

Posted on Oct 20 2011 at http://sagaontour.moonfruit.com/#

'Okay, let’s see. What can I reveal without being too revealing?
Let’s start with the album release being pushed back to January. Both Edel and the band understand how important this album is and we all feel that we have to “get this one right” so to speak. Instead of just finishing the record to meet a deadline, the whole team felt strongly enough about what we have that a January release date was chosen. This allows everyone the chance to give the album all the support it deserves. The team at Edel have been amazing and we are extremely pleased with the partnership.
We expect only great things in the weeks/months/years to come.

A little info about the album? We will be announcing the title shortly, meanwhile, it will have 10 tracks, including a new Jim Gilmour lead vocal. These are the track titles (you may notice a familiar name in there!), although some may change by the time we go to copy.
So, in no particular order:

Another Day Out Of Sight
Anywhere You Wanna Go
Ball And Chain
Ellery
Lost For Words
One Of These Days
Show And Tell
It's Not Gone
Spin It Again
‘Till The Well Runs Dry

All the recording of the album is now essentially finished and it’s in final mix mode, which will be followed by a review by the band, mastering and then…it’s all yours! I’m sure that Edel has some sort of “special” or “deluxe” edition planned as well, including DVD footage, but I haven’t any details regarding any of that at this time.

As far as the tour goes, we will be featuring, hopefully, at least 2 songs from the new album as well as a very diverse selection of material this time around, including something we’ve put together that we are affectionately referring to as “The ¾ Medley”. Also, there may be as few as 5 or 6 Saga “standards” in the set so all of that should make for quite an entertaining evening!
And that, my friend(s), is the story so far!
Looking forward to seeing you all somewhere on tour!

Michael'
