Saxon – ‘Heavy Metal Thunder – Live – Eagles Over Wacken review

Saxon – ‘Heavy Metal Thunder – Live – Eagles Over Wacken review
Released on: UDR / EMI. Release date: Available now

OK, I’ve had this little gem for some time now, among the many other albums, DVD’s and other packages of one of each, that keep showing up at the ‘Williams Towers!’ It’s certainly, busy, busy here!
There is so much in this package that put simply, if you’re a Saxon fan of any kind, I urge you to get hold of a copy of this – if you haven’t done so already! - Double CD and DVD set or should that read triple set!
'Heavy Metal Thunder - Live - Eagles Over Wacken' is indeed a special release, read on ...

There are two live CD discs here; recorded live in Glasgow on last year’s UK ‘A Call To Arms’ leg of the band’s world tour.
Then there’s the DVD …, which is mammoth! A running time of 177 minutes, yes, just shy of three hours of the band’s performances at Germany’s Wacken festival, featuring their shows from 2004, 2007 and 2009.

For the DVD, I can really only summarize, as to do a complete breakdown on it, I’d be here for bloody ever!
I think it’s great though and for an old Saxon fan like me, it was great to see the old Eagle on stage behind the band with all the floodlights on it. Killer!
I remember seeing Biff (Byford) strapping himself to the Eagle, back on the ‘Eagle has Landed’ tour in the 80’s and on the ‘Power and the Glory’ tour too.
Plenty of great material on the live DVD, even if at times Biff does seem to be labouring just a little … Why he wears that bloody huge coat / jacket for so long on stage is beyond me? He must be bloody dying in it!
So many classic Saxon tracks on here too, with a total of 31 songs performed and some great behind the scenes features too, it’s an absolute winner!
My only confusion therein though is on drummers involved on the live DVD, as Nigel Glockler is the only drummer credited in the sleeve notes, yet there is another drummer playing and I believe it is Jorg Michael who had replaced Fritz RandowGlockler’s replacement. - in 2004.
There is no credit though here, for Jorg Michael on the sleeve notes.
The rest of the band here is original guitar player Paul Quinn, long time member Doug Scarett (Guitars) and Nibbs Carter (Bass/ Keyboards).

Saxon was and clearly still is a great live act, as I saw last October, here in Detroit – http://chambersofrock.blogspot.com/2011/10/saxon-live-at-blondies-detroit-gig.html – at admittedly a much lower level, since unfortunately they never really broke the US in a big way, unlike the bands that back in the 80’s, they were more or less on an equal level with in the UK, such as Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, then those two went global!

It’s certainly not through lack of playing live, as Saxon were always committed to that. Shame …

The double live CD set was captured live in Glasgow, back in April of last year and as we saw here in Detroit, they played a lengthy set in Glasgow too, with a twenty four song setlist!

The intro track ‘Hybrid’ does drag out for some time - Especially since it's just that, an intro! - as the band gather themselves to launch into the excellent back to form new song ‘Hammer of the Gods’ which almost comes across – to diehard fans  - like ‘Princess of the Night.’
Then to a classic in ‘Heavy Metal Thunder,’ to the new ‘Back in ‘79’ which does evoke memories of old.

‘Never Surrender’ is a winner with the Glasgow crowd, before they play ‘I’ve Got To Rock (To Stay Alive)’ from their 2007 ‘Inner Sanctum’ album, which they originally recorded with special guests Angry Anderson (Rose Tattoo), Andi Deris (Helloween) and Lemmy (Motorhead), so they figure, let’s plug it some more here!

Always a Saxon classic is ‘Dallas 1pm’ up next and it’s no different here, love this track!
‘A Call To Arms’ title track is next and it really is a well-crafted track, as is the rest of that excellent album and the crowd clearly appreciates it too.
‘Solid Ball of Rock’ up next was the period of Saxon, where I tended to lose a listen interest, but you know, in this live setting, it works well, absolutely heavy and rockin’!
Then it’s a track from 2009’s ‘Into the Labyrinth’ album, with ‘Demon Sweeney Todd,’ reflecting that they don’t simply just put out a ‘Greatest Hit’s’ live package.
Power to you guys!

That said, I’ve got absolutely no complaints about hearing ‘And The Bands Played On’ next, Saxon’s tribute to the old Donington Park, the location of the original UK ‘Monsters of Rock’ festival.
‘Man and Machine’ is from the ‘Lionheart’ album, that I recall the band saying when they released it, that it was a return to form ala ‘Wheels of Steel / Strong Arm of the Law,’ which I for one totally disagree with.
This is very much more standard metal to me and it lacks something, but it fits the bill here.
The harmony guitar part being the only real highlight for me personally …

They delve into ‘Denim and Leather’ next and Biff tells the crowd, ‘Let’s go f**king crazy!’ with ‘Play it Loud,’ which hits the spot to me, bringing back great memories!

It’s back to the latest album next for ‘When Doomsday Comes (Hybrid  Theory)’ and it’s a bit of a more thought out track for the band, which echoes the class of the latest release.

Back to classic Saxon with ‘To Hell and Back Again’ next and I really love that period from the band!
This acts as the closing number for CD disc number one …

They kick right back in on CD disc two, with ‘Motorcycle Man,’ and Biff announces that the show is being recorded tonight for a later release, before saying ‘Let’s take a ride on a f**king motorcycle!’
So now you know it’s all favourites from here out!
Denim and Leather’ follows before the killer ‘Princess of the Night,’ a track that has become my ultimate favourite Saxon track and hearing the crowd singing the opening verse, it kind of makes clear it’s a huge crowd winner!

‘Crusader’ followed by ‘747 (Strangers in the Night),’ then ‘The Eagle Has Landed,’ remind me of how much I enjoy this band live!
Loved seeing them last year for the first time in 20 years or more!

The pace does not let up, as ’20,000 Feet’ rocks out next, quick rock without question!

The band returns for another encore in ‘Strong Arm of the Law’ which again bring back so many great memories from yesteryear! Thanks guys!

Closing track here, well there’s really only one left they could play at this stage right, ‘Wheels of Steel!’

I can’t say enough much this CD/DVD is special to me. Catching the band last year, gave me a renewed love of the band and in the latest album ‘A Call To Arms,’ they’ve found new glory years in this fans eyes and ears.

If you’re a fan of old, you will adore this set, it’s jammed packed with great memories, classic Saxon and then some!
If you’re a new fan or an intrigued rock fan of hard and heavy rock, from the classic generation, then do yourself a favour and track this down, a magic release!
Sorry it took so long to write about it, oh and what a great cover!

Rating: 4.75 out of 5 – Great package!

Note for Friday August 30th, 2012

Hi everyone,

So, no news ... So drained right now ...

Thanks for your support this week, those of you that have taken the time to still check in.
Sadly the hits seem lower than they have been for sometime ... :(
It's been tough since I started this new dayjob to do much for the site at all, working 10 - 16 hour days and I've only been there about 7 weeks.
It just seems messed up ... Working through a bunch of lunch breaks too, which means yet less time for 'Chambers of Rock.'

At this rate, it may well come down to folding the site up ...

I've also been waiting on a well known musician to return the manuscript of our interview that he and I have been going back and forth on, while his band toured Europe but now he's back home in the US, clearly though he has other priorities, which I understand.
He has been away from his family for sometime.

I also have to still type up an interview with Joe Lynn Turner that he and I did, much earlier this year ...

Again, keeping the site going for all you folks and fitting in reviews means less time for typing up those interviews and editing them.
I had planned to talk to Rik Emmett (Triumph) soon, but now I'm questioning myself about doing that ...

I'd like to be more positive about things, but with low hits at the site - And this week, although there has been a news update Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. - it's been tough to justify.
There's no income from doing this folks - Amazon in connection with Blogger changed some of their tactics and an App on Blogger, that took people to the Amazon sale of the product, changed a while back, so it makes it look cheesy to simply add a link at the end of eachreview.
Also fewer PR folks are offering review tickets for gigs, so less to cover there at the cost of current gigs ...

It's just simply getting harder and harder to justify, after six months of my starting the site, it was getting plenty of attention then and I thought, 'OK, it's doing this good, I need to stay on top of it, so I quit playing in a local band with Rhonda to focus on this.
Since then, work has got more crazy, so then it becomes a battle ... Since starting this in December 2009, I'm now in my third daytime job ... I kid you not! Not cool huh?

I'll see how the site goes over the coming week, but seriously, if the hits drop off that much, the writing appears to almost be on the wall .... :(
It has been good while it lasted ... And those people that have stuck with me since the beginning thanks!
Friends that have tried to help out, some guest reviews - Thanks Mark, Dave and LeeAnn! - and those that have also helped in trying get some of the interviews this year typed up, I salute you rock 'n' roll troopers!

I do really apprecate you ALL, for all you have done to keep me focused here, sorry if it doesn't last much longer, but it's almost been three years, not bad with no outside publicity I suppose ... Thanks ...
Cheers,

Al

Brief News Update for Wednesday August 29th, 2012

Hi All,
Here we go, another update for you ...

Tonight been trying to stay on top of the reviews by watching the the DVD in the Triumph CD/DVD set 'Live in Sweden 2008.' Great stuff, but Rik Emmett is starining on encore track 'Fight The Good Fight,' nevertheless, the Swedish crowd seemed to have lapped it up.
Why it took four years to put out, is beyond me though ...?
Who knows where it will go from here though ... I think, from previous conversations with both Rik Emmett in 2009 and Gil Moore in 2010 - That interview here: http://chambersofrock.blogspot.com/2010/07/interview-with-gil-moore-triumph.html -  I personally don't believe we'll get anymore live Triumph dates, unless the new CD/DVD sells, I hope I'm proven wrong ...
It's cool that they had Dave Dunlop onstage live with them in Sweden. Dave tours with Rik Emmett in The Troubadours, playing acoustically, kind of bluesy / jazz stuff. The live in Sweden show, brings out the heavier side, the harmony guitar work is almost Iron Maiden like in places!
It's released this week, so if you want to encourage the band to play more live shows, I suggest you buy it and tell friends to buy it.
Anyway, enough on that ...
Thanks for your continued support, cheers, Al

THE WHO LIVE IN TEXAS ’75 ON DVD  AND DIGITAL VIDEO OCTOBER 9

New York, NY (August 23, 2012)—Eagle Rock Entertainment is thrilled to present one of the greatest live bands in rock’n’roll history:  The Who, 'Live In Texas ’75' on DVD October 9th, 2012.

Pete Townshend. Roger Daltrey. Keith Moon. John Entwistle.
Filmed in Houston, Texas 11/20/75, it was right at the start of a massive tour of the U.S. to promote The Who By Numbers, their seventh album in their 10th year of existence.  With Dolby Digital Stereo sound, this 117-minute 25-song bomb blast—previously only available as a muddled bootleg—has been pridefully restored to its rightful visual and sonic superiority by longtime Who collaborator Jon Astley.

Filmed only five years after what arguably is the greatest live album in rock, Live At Leeds, The Who Live In Texas ’75, lives up to and in some ways actually surpasses its predecessor’s greatness. The Who, at that particular point in time, had achieved an unerring almost magical mystical chemistry.

Between the windmilling antics of guitarist Townshend, the mic wire lasso of lead singer Daltrey, the crazed bombastic danger of drummer Moon  (1946-1978) and of course, their secret weapon, genius bassist John Entwistle (1944-2002), this was a truly revolutionary band who changed all the hard rock rules. Even the punks, in the anti-rock star era of the late ‘70s, loved The Who.

The extensive Tommy section…the savage recreations of early hits such as “My Generation” (with its iconic “hope I die before I get old” line delivered in all its lusty nihilistic truth)…the celebrated cover of Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues”…plus “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” make this a Who fan’s delight.

Jack Blades of Night Ranger/Damn Yankees Takes "Rock N' Roll Ride" to 2012 Republican National Convention
Iconic Entertainer Joins GOP in Tampa to Help Show America is "Back in the Game"

TAMPA, FL -- You can still rock in America -- and with his blend of common-sense conservatism and rock n' roll credentials, Jack Blades is out to prove it.  The songwriter, bassist, lead singer and front man of Night Ranger and Damn Yankees is in Tampa, Florida this week to participate in the 2012 Republican National Convention, where he'll perform "Back in the Game," the lead track from his latest solo effort, Rock 'n Roll Ride, and make appearances in support of Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and other GOP candidates.

You can see the official video for 'Back in the Game' here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpOPMYadzrE

"This country was built on the hard work of individual Americans who took a chance and pursued a dream," says Blades, who has sold more than 25 million albums throughout his remarkable career and performed in front of millions of fans worldwide.  "Too often today I see that sort of initiative being discouraged and punished.  We can do better.  That's why I'm honored to have been asked to be involved in the convention."

Blades' music has long had a patriotic flavor, evident in Night Ranger's classic 1983 hit "(You Can Still) Rock in America" and emerging more recently in his solo hit "Back in the Game," the video for which made its debut earlier this year on radio and TV host Sean Hannity's website.  Night Ranger also performed for U.S. troops stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2008, an experience Blades found deeply inspiring.

With a career spanning three decades, Blades has recorded with, penned songs and produced albums for some of the music industry's biggest names, including Aerosmith, Cher, Ringo Starr, Alice Cooper, Roger Daltrey, Journey, Vince Neil, Ozzy Osbourne, Styx, Ted Nugent, and Motley Crue.

Blades has brought his common-sense conservatism and passion for America to television, appearing as a guest on Fox News' "Hannity" and "Red Eye" programs.

Blades' music has been featured in films such as Armageddon, OscAmerican Dad,ar-nominated Boogie Nights, Tommy Boy; television shows such as South Park and the wildly successful Rock Band and Guitar Hero video games; and the Rock of Ages hit Broadway musical and feature film.
