Late News Update for Saturday March 31st, 2012

Ronnie Montrose tribute show to go ahead

Rockers are getting together to honoured their old mate Ronnie Montrose who sadly passed away earlier this month.

A Concert For Ronnie Montrose
A Celebration of His Life In Music

Sammy Hagar reunites original Montrose band plus Joe Satriani to perform landmark 1st Montrose album!

The Bay Area music community is coming together to produce "A Concert For Ronnie Montrose - A Celebration of His Life In Music" for legendary San Francisco guitarist Ronnie Montrose, who passed away recently from complications from prostate cancer.
It will be held at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco on Friday, April 27.
Tickets are already on sale.

"A Concert For Ronnie Montrose - A Celebration of His Life In Music" will feature the original Montrose lineup (Sammy Hagar, vocals; Bill Church, bass; and Denny Carmassi, drums), performing the landmark first Montrose album, with special guest Joe Satriani on lead guitar.

The original Gamma lineup (Davey Pattison, vocals; Glenn Letsch, bass; Denny Carmassi, drums) will also be on hand, with special guest Marc Bonilla on lead guitar. There will also be an All-Star band, comprised of many of the great musicians that Ronnie played with over the years. Some of the confirmed artists include: Neal Schon from Journey, Steve Smith formerly also of Journey, members of Tesla, Eric Martin from Mr. Big, Rickie Philips from Styx, Eric Singer from KISS, Tommy Thayer of KISS and Jimmy DeGrasso from Y & T and Alice Cooper.

Ronnie Montrose was born in San Francisco and moved with his family to Colorado when he was two, returning back to his native home when he was 19 years old. In 1969, he started a band with Bill Church called Sawbuck, but that project got sidetracked when Ronnie was hired to do studio work with Van Morrison (Tupelo Honey), Boz Scaggs, Edgar Winter, Herbie Hancock, and others.
In 1973, he formed his own band, Montrose, who recorded two albums together.  The debut Montrose album went platinum and has been called the first American heavy metal album. In 1979, Ronnie formed Gamma, who recorded four albums. Ronnie continued to record through the 1980s and 1990s, and Gamma put out their fifth album in 2005.

This is from Leighsa Montrose, Ronnies beloved wife: 'Ronnie was the kindest man I had ever met. I am honored that he was my husband and best friend as well. We slept together, we woke each morning together and we shared every meal together. We savored every moment that we had together. I am so proud of him for the man he was, which extended far beyond his musical abilities. I am full of joy to have been a part of his life, and I'm so happy that he was a part of mine. I dearly thank all of you for your friendship and love you shared with him. I know it meant everything to him.
All love,
Mrs. Leighsa Montrose

Sammy Hagar stated, "One of my top priorities this year was a Montrose reunion. Ronnie and I planned to do it in Cabo in October. I am so sad it won't happen, but on April 27th, Joe Satriani, Denny Carmassi, Bill Church and I are going to play the hell out of some Montrose!!!"

Tickets to "A Concert For Ronnie Montrose - A Celebration of His Life In Music" are already on sale.  General admission tickets are $55.00 and VIP Reserved tickets are $175.00. www.AXS.com and www.goldenvoice.com

There's no doubt in my mind, that Ronnie deserved no less.
The guy was a talent whose playing no doubt has influenced so many.
Here's to you Ronnie, RIP mate.

Night Ranger Summer tour dates revealed

So, there's no new album from Night Ranger this year, to follow 2011's excellent 'Somewhere in California' release, but bassist / vocalist Jack Blades has just released his latest blast entitled 'Rock 'n' Roll Ride' via Frontiers records.

That said, Night Ranger is renowned every year - pretty much without fail - for their US Summer tour dates and this year looks like being no different, with the latest batch of dates revealed running from May through until September ...
At this time they have only revealed twenty dates, but the fact that these run across five months, means there's sure to be plenty more!

Last year was quite different for the band though, as they tagged onto the mega tour with Journey and Foreigner, taking the opening slot which sadly limited them to just over thirty five minutes a night.
Now the following dates will allow the band to get back to headlining again, typically providing a set around ninety minutes long.
Being a long time fan, I can tell you this, I've yet to leave a Night Ranger gig disappointed!

Summer tour dates announced so far:

5/11: Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia, MD
5/12: May Fest on Main - Main Stage - North Myrtle Beach, SC
6/1: Arcadia Creek Festival Place - Kalamazoo, MI
6/2: Community Center - Lenox Village, IL

Brief Update for Friday March 30th, 2012

GANG OF OUTLAWS TOUR ANNOUNCED STARRING ZZ TOP AND 3 DOORS DOWN WITH SPECIAL GUEST GRETCHEN WILSON

Sure to be one of this touring season’s hottest packages, The Gang of Outlaws Tour, brings three leaders of their respective genres together for six weeks of performances this May and June.  Joining the legendary ZZ Top are 3 Doors Down and, on most of the dates, Gretchen Wilson.
The tour will alight at select eastern, southern and mid western venues, kicking off May 25 in Manchester, NH.

ZZ Top, “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” will be topping the bill and playing the songs that have made the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers American music icons in the forefront of blues-based rock for more than forty years.  The band’s line-up of Billy F Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard has been intact all that time – a feat unequalled in the annals of music history.  Their catalog of massive hits includes “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Legs,” “Tush,” “LaGrange” and more.
It is expected they’ll preview new material from their forthcoming release over the course of "The Gang of Outlaws” Tour.

Notes Gibbons, “We’re really looking forward to working with the guys from 3 Doors Down and Gretchen too, if we may borrow from the late, great Robert Johnson, clear those stones from the pass way on this phenomenal tour.  The Gang of Outlaws is ready to ride!”

ZZ Top will be partnering up with southern alternative rock’s hugely successful 3 Doors Down, straight out of Escatawpa, Mississippi. The group — Brad Arnold, Matt Roberts, Todd Harrell, Chris Henderson and Greg Upchurch– brings its multi-platinum catalog of hits and album tracks to the tour including their #1 smash hits “Kryptonite,” “When I’m Gone” and “Here Without You,” and their latest chart topper “It’s Not My Time.” Says lead singer Brad Arnold of Gang of Outlaws, “The tour is huge! We have the honor to share the stage with some amazing artists, including one of my favorite bands, ZZ Top! We can’t wait to bring Gang Of Outlaws to your town.”

Rounding out the bill in style is Gretchen Wilson, representing the distaff side of the Gang of Outlaws. Her breakthrough hit, “Redneck Woman” is well known as the anthem of southern sass and femininity.  Her catalog of rock-inspired country hits includes multiple platinum albums and such single smashes as “Here For The Party,” “When I Think About Cheatin’,” “Homewrecker,” “All Jacked Up” and more.  She expressed her feelings about her participation in a no uncertain terms: “Obviously I couldn’t be more excited that I am to be part of this tour…  Fabulous guys, fabulous musicians!”

Y&T live at the Token Lounge (Westland, Michigan. USA) March 9th 2012

Y&T live at The Token Lounge, Westland, Michigan, USA
Friday March 9th 2012

Well folks, as regular readers know, from time to time I have been fortunate to have had the occasional guest reviewer help me out here at Chambers of Rock, covering live shows when I've been unable to attend from time to time.
This show, I have to say is one I really did not want to miss as Y&T are a very old favourite of mine, who I was fortunate to catch a few years back at the Emerald Theatre in Mt. Clemens, Michigan and close to home, but on this occasion I could not make it to The Token Lounge. Fortunately, my old mate Dave Dunford duly obliged as it was actually very close to home for him, so it's over to Dave for his review. Thanks Dave!

++++++ * ++++++

Having been a big Y&T fan for many years I was pleased to see them making a stop in the Detroit area on their current 2012 tour in support of their most recent release – Facemelter. Over the years (decades!!) I have probably caught them six or seven times live, have always liked their music and still play the Black Tiger and Meanstreak albums on my iPod regularly.

I had never been to the Token Lounge and had no idea what to expect but was pleasantly surprised to find it to be a decent sized venue with a good sized stage. Plenty of parking too, making it a venue I would certainly return to willingly.

When we arrived the warm up band had just started their first song. My apologies for missing their name ….. I think they were a local band but unfortunately for them (and us!!) the sound was so bad it was almost impossible to hear a word of any of the lyrics and really get a feel for how they played musically!!
I was a little concerned that the house sound system and mixing was maybe just poor and that’s what we would get for Y&T too once they hit the stage.

Y&T at Token Lounge, Westland, Michigan - Photo by Dave Dunford

Fortunately, that proved not to be the case …. In fact once Y&T opened fire (Sorry!) it was noticeable immediately that the sound was excellent and the band sounded very crisp and clear.
The band looked good and sounded good and right from the off looked like they were really enjoying themselves, today the band is made up of original and founder Dave Meniketti (guitar / vocals), John Nymann (guitar), Mike Vanderhule (drums) and Brad Lang (bass).

Open Fire was the first song leading instantly into Don’t Wanna Lose and then Black Tiger.
As I said previously, the sound was great and the venue had filled up nicely. - I’m terrible at guessing the size of a crowd, but I’m reliably informed that there was about 300 people squeezed in the Token Lounge!

At the back of the stage was a backdrop of the Facemelter cover with a decent lighting system overhead and a healthy stack of amps either side of the stage.

Y&T side stage shot at Token Lounge, Westland, Michigan

Lipstick & Leather, Don’t Stop Running and Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark all got an airing before one of my personal favorites, Midnight In Tokyo.
Dave Meniketti has been fronting this band since 1974 and yet he still looked like he was loving every minute being on stage and played every single note throughout the set as enthusiastically as possible. Well worth every cent of the admission fee.

Al had asked that once the band kicked in to Meanstreak that I call him and I duly obliged. – Editors note: Thanks Dave!
I also fired off a text to my brother - Even though it was 4:00am in his time zone! - telling him I was at a Y&T concert and commenting that it must have been almost 30 years since we first went to see them in England. The next morning he had replied that it was November 21st 1983!!! How time flies……

Summertime Girls, Shine On, Blind Patriot - both from the Facemelter CD - and the timeless Winds Of Change came next, followed by Contagious, I’m Coming Home  - also from FacemelterI’ll Cry For You, Eyes Of A Stranger, Dirty Girl, Hurricane and a Mike Vanderhule drum solo. There was ample dialogue between most of the songs, not too much but just a little Meniketti anecdote here and there.

Bar Room Boogie, the classic I Believe In You and Forever closed the main set before the band returned to play Hang ‘Em High and Rescue Me before disappearing for the night.

Overall the set was great, all the songs I wanted to hear with three new songs and every one was played with a great amount of enthusiasm and the sound was excellent. Really well mixed and not too loud that it became distorted.

We left the Token very pleased, really not a bad venue at all and Y&T was great.
If you get a chance to check them out sometime ….., do it, you won’t be disappointed.
A real class act, thank you and goodnight!

Editor's note: Thanks Dave, nice review mate, don't you think folks?!
Keep up the good work and I'll happily ask you to help out again.
Cheers, Al

Tyketto to release 'Dig In Deep' on Frontiers

Getting together to write your first album in over eighteen years is no easy feat, especially when the band members are spread out all over the globe. But after many successful years of touring on the heels of their classic albums DON'T COME EASY and STRENGTH IN NUMBERS, Tyketto felt it was time to introduce the fans to new music.
With recent appearances at Sweden Rock, Download, Firefest, Hard Rock Hell and Hard in Rio, the band realized they still had a huge fan base worldwide and the timing was perfect for a new album.
All the original band members agreed to make a new record, but on some conditions.
*The music had to be written by the core writing team of Danny Vaughn, Brooke St. James, and Michael Arbeeny (Clayton).
*The music should have stayed true to the Tyketto roots, but at the same time the album should have reflected where the band members lives were today.
*It should rock!

Sessions for DIG IN DEEP began in 2009 ago with the exchanging of demo ideas and a few preproduction visits to Brooke's Las Vegas home. With Brooke in Vegas (and now in Wisconsin), Danny in Gibraltar (and now Spain) and Michael in New Jersey (and still in New Jersey!), the band certainly had their work cut out for them.

Michael recalls receiving the initial song demos from Danny: "As I listened to the first set of songs, I immediately drew parallels to our debut album, DON'T COME EASY. Although the words were different, many of the sentiments were the same. The themes of classic Tyketto songs such as WALK ON FIRE, WINGS and SAIL AWAY were simple: don't let anything stand in the way of what you want in life. Those sentiments are echoed in songs like THE FIGHT LEFT IN ME and DIG IN DEEP.
As the months passed and the ideas became songs, we knew we were onto something very special. In typical Tyketto fashion, we collected a wide array of material. Rockers like SOUND OFF and FAITHLESS will make those "FOREVER YOUNG" fans happy, while we show our more melodic side with BATTLE LINES, MONDAY and the epic ballad THIS IS HOW WE SAY GOODBYE. LOVE TO LOVE shows off our acoustic laced rock side ala SEASONS. We feel there is something here for everyone. It is hard to meet that balance of giving fans what they want without repeating yourself. We feel DIG IN DEEP has met that balance perfectly."
The making of the album was fraught with scheduling issues, weather delays, internal differences of opinion and a myriad of other problems associated with making an record. In the end, the band’s vision was met, so now DIG IN DEEP is the perfect third chapter in the Danny Vaughn era of Tyketto.
The band debuted some of the new material at British and American shows in December 2011 to rave reviews. With a 2012 slot scheduled for Firefest and a full scale tour in the works, Tyketto keeps on doing what they do best: writing great songs and performing live for their fans.

TYKETTO is:
 Danny Vaughn - Lead vocals
Brooke St. James - Lead guitar & backing vocals
Jimi Kennedy - Bass guitar & backing vocals
 Michael Clayton - Drums

HARDLINE’s lineup revolution welcomes you in the “Danger Zone”

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of HARDLINE’s new studio album entitled “Danger Zone” on May 18th in Europe and May 22nd in North America.

Following the release of “Leaving The End Open”, HARDLINE’s mastermind and singer Johnny Gioeli did not realistically feel that another HARDLINE album would have seen the light of day sometime soon. It was again thanks to the insistence of Frontiers Records President Serafino Perugino that the concept came about once again “I love surprises and this was certainly one of them”, says Gioeli. “Each time I decide to close the door on Hardline, I get the itch to continue”.

Fate wanted that when Perugino sent Gioeli some song demos written by Alessandro Del Vecchio (an Italian musician and producer know for his work with Edge of Forever and Eden’s Curse but also with Axe, Mitch Malloy, Bobby Kimball and several other top musicians and bands), the singer became excited once again and wanted to give it another go.

“Ale is one talented brotha...” tells Johnny, “he plays, writes, sings, engineers, produces and mixes... He's like the golden goose handed to me. More than all the talent he has, he is an example of a great human in many many ways. I look forward to making more music with Ale. And it doesn't hurt that he's Italian too!”
Alessandro Del Vecchio says: “I feel humbled but at the same time excited as never before. I grew up with Double Eclipse, which I bought when I was 13, so it's really a combination of feelings. The whole thing started so naturally that I feel like me and Johnny have been knowing each other for years. Our goal was to match the superb quality of that milestone of a debut and we worked hard to get to it, but we also wanted this record to be a shift and the truthful mirror of this "new" life for Hardline”. And, according to Gioeli “I think all of the Hardline records have a magic about them... this one certainly holds a more commercial pop sound to its heartbeat. I love it.”

So now Hardline have been completed with a European based lineup featuring Francesco Jovino (UDO), Thorsten Koehne (Code Of Perfection, Eden's Curse) and Anna Portalupi (Mitch Malloy).

“I would absolutely LOVE to tour with these guys. I think the fans would be quite surprised when they hear this band....like a good solid kick in the teeth” concludes Gioeli and certainly discussions are ongoing to have finally Hardline play some dates around Europe in support of this exciting new release.

“Danger Zone” tracklisting includes: Fever Dreams; 10.000 Reasons; Danger Zone; What I'd Like; Stronger Than Me; Never Too Late For Love; Stay; I Don't Want To Breakaway; Look At You Now; Please Have Faith In Me; Show Me Your Love; The Only One.

-----ooo0ooo-----

Hardline was formed when brothers Johnny (vocals) and Joey (guitar) Gioeli, originally from the band Brunette, teamed up with Journey/Bad English guitarist Neal Schon. The original plan was for Neal to produce Hardline, but as he was having so much fun that he decided to join the band as soon as he left Bad English.
They immediately added established musicians Todd Jensen (David Lee Roth, Alice Cooper) on bass and Deen Castronovo (also coming from Bad English) on drums to the mix and the result was magnificent. They went on to record their debut album “Double Eclipse” for MCA in 1992 and then went on the tour circuit with such heavy hitters as Van Halen and Mr. Big.

The first single from “Double Eclipse” was the song "Hot Cherie". While never popular in the mainstream, various radio stations worldwide started to play it and Hardline's fanbase started to grow. They released a video to MTV, but did not get much airplay. By that time grunge and alternative had already taken over and Melodic Rock was being pushed aside. Tension among band members, the record company and perhaps certain egos, got in the way of an immediate follow-up album, despite the band having written more than enough material.

While Neal re-started his adventure with Journey in 1995 (again together with Deen Castronovo), Johnny stepped out of the music business eventually to return as Axel Rudi Pell’s singer in 1998 on the album “Oceans Of Time”.

But years later Johnny and his brother Joey were ready to give it another go with Hardline after the call of Frontiers Records, and with an all new line-up they produced the awesome return album “II” in 2002 with Josh Ramos (of The Storm and Two Fires fame) taking Neal Schon’s place on lead guitar.

Hailed by critics and fans alike as a top return, the band returned on stage headlining the GODS Festival in Bradford in June 2002, before Johnny and Josh started to work on new songs which eventually saw the light of day on the “Leaving the End Open” album released on Frontiers in may 2009.

“Elation” thrives on Great White’s signature grit and blues-hued sound, only marked with a new synergy. It’s a fresh and healthier start than ever before. I’m like a kid in a candy store.”
Kendall, one of rock’s most notable guitarists, echoed Desbrow’s pure excitement. “The energy in the studio is amazing,” Kendall says. “This is the most excited I’ve been since I was nine-years-old and got my first guitar. It's remarkable to be doing our third record with Frontiers Records and to feel the love and support from Serafino and his team. They are truly part of the Great White family."
Lardie, who also served as “Elation”’s producer, applauded the band’s teamwork in the studio. He was struck by the group’s song writing approach and enthusiasm, and assures fans will embrace the record.
