Status Quo duo Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt OBE's in The Queen's New Years Honours!

Status Quo's Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi will go into 2010 having been appointed with OBE's for their services to music and charity over the years.
Congratulations to them both!
This just posted on the BBC's news page - Of course, it's already New Years Eve there!

The band this year celebrated 40 years together, releasing a fantastic live DVD Pictures - Live in Montreux 2009, which I recently reviewed on this blog site. Review can be found here:

Also side note reminder of Francis Rossi's solo stuff.

Francis Rossi 'One Step at a Time' - Solo Tour - May 2010

Live Nation are proud to announce that Francis will undertake his first ever solo tour in May 2010. The "One Step At A Time" tour, that takes the name of his solo album to be released by EarMUSIC, through Edel in April 2010, will take in six UK dates. He will be accompanied by an 8 piece band.

Francis commented, "I never stop writing songs and melodies but there have been many tracks over the years that just weren't right for Quo. These songs have been gathering dust in my mind for too long and now seems the right time to showcase them. It's a big step for me but I hope to see lots of the same faces out there on the road!"

All Star benefit concert at The Avalon in Hollywood on January 6th - Concert for Sophia

Sophia Stormy Smith was born on April 28th 2009 at 3 lbs 10 oz. She's had a awfully hard time so far on Earth.

She was a premature baby and underwent a critical life saving 6.5 hour operation on the very day she was born. She then spent a month in the Northridge NICU for newborns. Baby Sophia and her parents have bravely gone through so much pain. No one should have to travel this path alone...I remember Sophia came home for the first time on Stuart's birthday. He was overjoyed and thankful. Now things have changed and her parents have been hit with crippling medical bills.
Together WE CAN all help Sophia. In order to pay for a surgery she must obtain by early 2010 we're going to put together a concert to help Stuart & Sophia pay for her medical, surgery & care. A medical trust fund has been set up for her with Chase Banking

Yes, even Rock Stars "need a little help from their friends" & will "get by with a little help from their friends"..."With a little help from OUR friends."

Stuart Smith is known internationally for his amazing Lead guitar and song writing ability. The founder of Heaven & Earth, Stuart has recently joined forces with Steve Priest in the USA version of the band SWEET. Having felt the economic crunch (as most of us here have) Stuart's long time friend Robert Tuozzo has very graciously offered to assist in helping to get aide for his precious daughter Sophia by putting on a benefit concert and setting up this site.

Between Stuart and Robert reaching out as a team to their many friends in the entertainment business, TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE MUSIC & HELP SOPHIA...
TOGETHER WE CAN

Aerosmith's Tom Hamilton checks in with an update ...

With so much uncertainty surrounding the band Aerosmith right now, bass player Tom Hamilton has taken the time to post a lengthy message to all the bands fans.

Tom starts by saying, "I know, I know! "What's goin' on with the band?" "What the hell are you guys up to?" Well it all boils down to Steven wanting to go solo for a while and the other four of us wanting to continue. I'm not getting into what and what not's been in the press lately. I'd like a day off from all that if you don't FREAKIN' mind.

Some weeks ago we finished four shows that were still left on the plate for this year. As we're getting close to the end of the year I found myself replaying my mental videos of those gigs."

Anyway, Tom's report is a lengthy one and he closes by saying this to everyone:

"I hope everybody has an awesome New Year. Make those resolutions! Put 'em in your head and let them grow. They'll happen someday!

More later,

Melodicrock.com 2nd Festival on the cards! Chicago will be the place to be!!!

Andrew McNiece the name behind possibly the best known rock website around - http://www.melodicrock.com/
- that covers of course melodic rock, hard rock, AOR, pop/rock along with a little metal stuff too, is preparing to make his second Melodicrock festival become a reality, the location will be Chicago, but as yet the final venue(s) is (are) not decided.

His first event was a fantastic occasion, where the artists involved including Mr. Big's Eric Martin, Joe Lynn Turner (Ex-Rainbow, Deep Purple, Yngwie Malmsteen, etc), Jim Peterik (Ex-Survivor, World Stage, Pride of Lions), Night Ranger's Kelly Keagy, Jack Blades, Joel Hoekstra and Christian Cullen, the Nelson brothers with their band and the main act Scrap Metal, Kevin Chalfant (The Storm, The Vu, Journey, etc), Mark Slaughter and so many other great musicians and their bands.

Anyway, Andrew has put out a request to rock fans out there and he's looking for suggestions from fans of how they would like the festival to be.
He posted this on his site today:

MELODICROCKFEST 2 - UPDATE:

I'm using the slower time of year to get some additional work done on MelodicRockFest 2 plans. Could really be an amazing event if everyone asked actually gets back to me with an affirmative answer. Stay tuned...

I'm also being approached by a number of smaller bands within this scene who are just hanging out for an outlet to perform at, so the choice is there for me to consider extending the Festival to include full Saturday and Sunday line-ups, as well as the VIP Friday night acoustic show.

The question is - would folks like a 2 day festival in a mainly standing venue (new Chicago venue, w/some seating available at this stage), and can they afford the time away and a weekend ticket price? And with the Monday following the April 30/May 1/May 2 weekend not being any kind of holiday - does that pose problems for those folks that had to be back at work Monday?

There would of course be options for separate tickets for both days for those that could only take in one of the days, but I'd welcome some additional feedback on this if you plan on attending. E-mail me at ajm@melodicrock.com or comment via the MelodicRock Twitter - http://twitter.com/MelodicRock - and / or Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-McNeice/541722325 - pages.
Cheers folks....stay tuned!

Metallica's Lar's claims he struggles with ringing in the ears

Well, surprise, surprise, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich is now publicly announces he suffers with ringing in the ears, because of how loud the music has been at shows.
He said this when CNN spoke to him:
"It's this constant ringing in the ears," Ulrich said. "It never sort of goes away. It never just stops."
Sorry Lars, but you guys play metal and loud ..., erm, what do you expect dude?

"I've been playing loud rock music for the better part of 35 years," said Ulrich, 46, drummer for the heavy metal band Metallica. "I never used to play with any kind of protection."

Update for Monday 28th December, 2009

Hi all, well, have to say it's been very quiet on the news front, in the world of rock over the last few days  ... Maybe that's a sign that it's all going to suddenly hit us, after everyone recovers from the holidays! :-)

LATE UPDATE!!!

Jim Peterik's World Stage 10th Anniversary!

Monday, December 28, 2009 - WORLD STAGE IS 10 YEARS OLD!

Ten years ago, JIM PETERIK had the idea to invite some of his collaborators to town and throw a little concert...
That "little concert" has grown to practically be a local holiday, and one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year. And WORLD STAGE 2010 is shaping up to be one of the best ever.

Jan 23rd, 2010 at the McAninch Arts Center on the Campus of The College Of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, JIM PETERIK presents the 10th Anniversary of WORLD STAGE.

The show this year marks the welcoming of a melodic rock giant. From LOVERBOY, MIKE RENO will rock the house.
Re-uniting with Jim once again, JIMI JAMISON's thrilling voice will roll out the hits of SURVIVOR.

It's a NIGHT RANGER trifecta! KELLY KEAGY, CHRISTIAN CULLEN, and direct from "ROCK OF AGES" on Broadway, JOEL HOEKSTRA.

Returning to World Stage after a too-long absence, from the JEFFERSON AIRPLANE and "LOVE, JANIS": CATHY RICHARDSON.
Another fan favorite who has been away too long, MARZETTE GRIFFITH is back.
It wouldn't be World Stage without bluesman ANTHONY GOMES.

It's not a trick, but it sure is magic as the World Stage band turns into PRIDE OF LIONS when TOBY HITCHCOCK grabs the microphone.

COLIN PETERIK continues to bloom as a writer and performer, you'll be surprised at his new direction in music.

We're just getting started. NICK COLIONNE tempers the rock heat with his cool jazz touch, and LISA McCLOWRY will treat us with a taste of the album she's been working on with JP during the past year.
Another great performer coming back to the fold is JEFF BOYLE, singing his unique songs.
And of course, the IDES OF MARCH will open the second set.

All of these tremendous singers need tremendous support and the WORLD STAGE BAND will provide it: Mike Aquino on Guitar, Klem Hayes on Bass, Ed Breckenfeld on Drums, Chris Neville on Keyboards, and Jeff Lantz on Piano will show their wizardry by shifting styles at a moment's notice.

Also in the band: JOEL HOEKSTRA from NIGHT RANGER on Guitar, Chuck Soumar and Scott May from the IDES on Percussion and Hammond Organ, respectively; with Chuck joining JOHN LARSON, Trumpet and DAVE STAHLBERG, Trombone in the IDES horn section "Babushka Brass".

THOM GRIFFIN leads the vocal chorus with Lisa McClowry, Toby Hitchcock and whoever lands up on the vocal stand!

It's going to be a fabulous night, so get your tickets while you can.
Go here for tickets: http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase
See you in January!!

A musical combining Stephen King and John Mellencamp?

No really, I couldn't believe it myself, but Pollstar have just made this announement:

Any collaboration between John Mellencamp and author Stephen King would be an event worth noting, but adding Kris Kristofferson, Rosanne Cash, Elvis Costello, Will Dailey, Dave Alvin, Phil Alvin, Sheryl Crow, Neko Case and boxing champ Joe Frazier to the mix knocks “Ghost Brothers of Darkland County” into the stratosphere.

Rock News for Thursday 24th December, 2009 - Christmas Eve

Well Hi folks and greetings to all this Christmas Eve, yes the big day is here again tomorrow!
Also meaning another year is nearly done and wow, where did that year go, can't believe they goes so fast now?! Guess it's a sad sign when we say that of us all getting older! ;-)

Anyway, enough of that, thanks to those that have visited the site here over the past 2 weeks, I appreciate it greatly and hope you like what you see and return on a regular basis.
Just yesterday I added a sitemeter, to get a realistic idea of how many people are visiting, as Blogger.com only seems to record who looks at the Blog site owners profile ...? That then becomes an approximate figure, that doesn't seem to then roll over.
My aim here folks, is IF and I'm afraid only IF, I get enough visitors come by, then I will go ahead with my plan for a full website. To do that then becomes more of a full time role and costs start to add up!
Enough of all this though, let's get on with the important stuff!
Merry Christmas to all of you and yours and a totally rockin' and prosperous New Year too!

Sadly Jeff Scott Soto cancels January 2010 London gig.

This was posted on his MySpace page on the 18th December, but in case anyone missed it:

JSS London Show / Camden Underworld Cancellation

It is with regret that we have to announce the cancellation of the forthcoming Jeff Scott Soto show at the Camden Underworld on 20 January 2010. The cancellation has been brought about because of the failure to secure three proposed shows in Greece due to the economic situation being faced by venues in that country.

Jeff Scott Soto commented "I am bitterly disappointed not to be able to reprise the show which we filmed for 'One Night In Madrid' at one of London's best rock venues and hate to let fans down, but the fact is that air fare increases and the cost of travel make it impossible to stage the show We want to be able to do this at some future date and will keep you informed."

JSS promotions would like to thank Neil Willis and Darryl James of FaBluSis and Alex Politis of Danger Angel in Greece for their efforts to make this happen.

Free Live at the Isle Of Wight Festival on Eagle Rock to be released in March ...

Free - Live at the Isle of Wight DVD

Debuting in 1968, The Isle Of Wight Festival built a reputation as a cherished musical tradition. One of its more famous sets was in 1970, when a cornucopia of legendary acts peppered the line-up, such as Jethro Tull, The Who, and The Moody Blues. One of these bands was none other than England’s Free. Fronted by reigning rock vocalist Paul Rodgers, this vintage footage shows the band performing classic tunes such as “All Right Now,” “Be My Friend,” “I’m A Mover,” and “Mr. Big.”

Well folks, really not too much else to share right now, it's Christmas Eve, so I guess everyone is busy doing whatever they need to last minute and I need to do my bit to help out here in the Williams home too!
If I get any more updates on anything today, believe me, I'll let you all know!

Rock News for Wednesday 23rd December, 2009

Heaven and Hell surprise (Shock?) announcement

I have to say while it's great that the band or management of Heaven and Hell (aka Dio's Black Sabbath), are confident of Ronnie James Dio recovery plan, from the stomach cancer he was recently dianosed with, wouldn't most people agree, it's a little premature to start lining up new tour dates, especially a big festival date? I think it would surely be better to wait for the all clear, maybe it's been done to give Ronnie more strength to beat the cancer, who knows?

It seems that they are going ahead though as the band has now been added to the UK's High Voltage festival list: http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/news/heaven-and-hell-to-play-high-voltage-festival/

The line up so far for the festival due to take place in London’s Victoria Park on July 24 and 25, 2010 is:

HEADLINERS:

• ZZ Top (July 24) and ELP (July 25)
MAIN STAGE:
• FOREIGNER (Who's new album Can’t Slow Down gets a UK release on March 1)
• HEAVEN AND HELL

PROG STAGE:
• ASIA
• MARTIN TURNER’S WISHBONE ASH
• FOCUS
• THE REASONING
• TOUCHSTONE
• STEVE HACKETT
• MARILLION

METAL HAMMER STAGE:
• BLACK LABEL SOCIETY
• CLUTCH

More acts to be confirmed.

Bret Michaels posts new exclusive new song on his website

Just posted at Bret Michaels website a new song or at least a trailer running at 1 minute 32 seconds ...,  for a new song, titled "Fall on Me" - Inspired perhaps by events at the Tony Awards where a stage prop took him out earlier this year.

Check out this new music from Bret’s upcoming album. This rough track, tentatively titled “Fall On Me” is still being worked on but is scheduled to appear on Bret’s upcoming album in 2010. Jeff Juliano who has mixed tracks for such artists as Dave Matthews, John Mayer & Shinedown mixed this demo version.

Interesting Led Zeppelin story here ...

From somewhere or other, it seems Led Zeppelin are being touted to play at next years Glastonbury Festival in the UK.
I guess there is no smoke without fire and the odds are already apparently at 6 - 1 that they will indeed headline the festival. - Who gave those odds, where they originated ..., hmmm

Maybe it is a realistic possibility, as Robert Plant has made it clear he doesn't want to tour Zep, but maybe he'll be up for another one off show?
The other thing to keep in mind is that the BBC is doing a Led Zeppelin special to be aired on Christmas day, maybe an announcement will be tied in with that broadcast?
The story is posted today at UK Classic Rock magazines website:

Thin Lizzy UK premier tribute band Limehouse Lizzy announce a mass of dates for 2010

OK, why you ask would I post a piece on a tribute band, well I have to confess to Thin Lizzy having been my favourite live band ever, when Phillip Lynott was around and so subsequently I've seen more than a few Lizzy tribute acts.
Limehouse Lizzy - IMHO - have to be THE best Lizzy tribute band I have ever seen live and when I lived in the UK, I must have seen them about 5 times. Great band.
I only wish now, they could find a way of getting over here to the USA. Personal peeve!

Steven Tyler sadly is back in rehab ....

Reuters news agency has sadly tonight confirmed that Steven Tyler is indeed back in rehab, after seemingly being back on the right track with his band mates in Aerosmith ...

Tyler, 61, said in a statement to People magazine that he was receiving treatment at an undisclosed facility for pain management and an addiction to prescription painkillers resulting from 10 years of performance injuries.

"With the help of my family and team of medical professionals, I am taking responsibility for the management of my pain and am eager to be back on the stage and in the recording studio with my band mates," he said.

A hugely publicised bust up with band members after his "falling off stage" incident, during the start of their double header summer US tour with southern boogie rockers ZZ Top which was then subsequently cancelled, spread all over news outlets around the globe, when he broke his shoulder.
Various band members including long time friend Joe Perry, claimed that Tyler could not be reached and he wouldn't answer or return phonecalls.

Tyler claimed that his reason for being out of contact with band mates was that he needed some "Tyler time."
Since then Tyler has recently got up onstage with Aerosmith guitarist's, side band the Joe Perry Project.

Status Quo to play "Rock 4 Life" festival in Inverness, Scotland May 2010.

Britain's best-loved rockers Status Quo will perform at 2010's first major concert of the year in the Highlands. Caledonian Productions Ltd will host the event in Inverness on 1 May 2010.
Crowds of 20,000 will attend on each day of the two-day festival at Bogbain Farm, on the outskirts of the Highland capital,

And they can expect a surprise the next day with another great name to be announced for the second night.
Tobias Leask, director of Caledonian Productions, said: "This will be the biggest day in the Highlands for years.
"To have Status Quo coming here is amazing - and it's all in aid of a great cause."
Cash raised at the event will go towards Highlands Hospice, who care for hundreds of people each year.
Tobias said: "We believe this will be the biggest open air concert in the Highlands.
"This will be the first of its kind in the Highlands. It will be a fantastic event, which will continue for years to come, raising cash for a host of local charities."

Status Quo are still hugely in demand act, and are a live music institution.
Their last album "Pictures: 40 Years Of Hits" sold over quarter of a million copies in the UK alone last year and was accordingly been certified Gold.
The band can't wait to perform for the fans that helped them reach this milestone.
The "Pictures" album became the band's 37th chart album and also their 29th to reach the Top Twenty - and that statistic puts them ahead of The Beatles.

Quo now stand in the silver medal position on the all-time table [with only those Rolling Stones ahead of them].
The show in Inverness represents a great opportunity to witness one of the world's greatest ever live acts doing what they do best.
Francis Rossi commented: "Playing to our fans is still and has always been the most important thing for the band. "Nothing beats playing live and we always look forward to performing to a lively Scottish crowd".
Britain's greatest rock n roll band are still going strong - don't bet against them celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2015!

Tickets go on sale at 9am on 18 December 2009 and are available online at www.iristickets.co.uk or can be bought locally. Tickets are priced from £45 [booking fees may apply].

Tickets for the first day of the festival are £45, with the second day £55. A two-day ticket will cost £90.

Rumours are doing the rounds that the Sunday night will be headlined by Canadian rocker Bryan Adams but it's still to be confirmed.

Richard Marx, slight update ...

So really, am I one of the 'few' rock fans who admits to admiring this guys talent?
I caught his show live in Detroit probably about 5 years or so back now and have to say, he's a great live act as well as a very smart and strong writer / musician.

Back in November on his website Richard Marx posted a note to say he'd co-written a new song with Ringo Starr.
” I had so much fun doing that tour with Ringo in ‘06, and we’ve stayed in touch quite a bit, so last winter he asked me over to his house in LA to write a song with him. It was a track he’d already come up with and I liked it and started writing a melody to it on the spot, and then we wrote the lyrics together within an hour or so. The song’s called, “Mystery of the Night.”
More here: http://richardmarx.com/site/2009/11/richard-marx-on-ringo-starr-declares-y-not/

Marx himself has been out on the road doing some low key Duo gigs with Matt Scannell and will doing more in the New Year, as well as a few band shows. Check out the tour dates on his site here:

More info and some other dates posted via Pollstar too here:

His current album, Emotional Remains released in September this year, is available exclusively through Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Emotional-Remains-Richard-Marx/dp/B002OHE08U

Ronnie Wood ..., not looking so good!

It seems Rolling Stones guitar slinger Ronnie Wood is in the news again for all the wrong reasons, again!
Following an incident earlier this month where UK Police arrested him on suspicion of assault near his southern England home, it seems the Police have now issued a formal warning for "common assault," to Wood to watch himself.
The incident - violent arguement - between Wood and his 21-year-old on-off girlfriend Ekaterina Ivanovawas seen by a passer by who dialled 999 immediately.

Can you help John Mellencamp stop smoking?

How sad is this story then?
I just happened to stop by John Mellencamp's website for I must say, is the first time in quite a while and I saw this story / piece posted there, from just a week back, which is in fact for a cause started by his son, Speck:

A Call to Action to All Mellencamp Fans! YOU Can Help John Stop Smoking!
Last week word spread that John's teenage son Speck had created a Facebook group stating that if 1,000,000 people became members his Dad, John Mellencamp, would quit his life-long smoking habit. The story spread as it caught the attention of fans and media worldwide. The group has nearly 200,000 members already and continues to grow but we need your help!
Here are two easy ways you can help add to the goal:

1. Post the LINK to the group and talk about it on your own personal facebook/twitter/blog -
2. Directly invite or challenge a few of your friends and family to sign up.

Let’s help Speck achieve his goal of a healthier Dad! If each of us reaches out to a few people the number can really increase!

Scorpion Rudolf Schenker coming to America ..., briefly, then onto South America!

It seems the Scorpions guitarist is having fun with his hobby, rally driving as he heads to Antofagasta, Chile for some off road driving, stopping just briefly in L.A.
Here's the scoop from the Scorpions website: http://www.the-scorpions.com/english/

Rudolf Schenker will be spending Christmas in Los Angeles –though ‘only’ as a mere stopover on an adventurous trip. "It’s unreal," says Rudolf, "I will be accompanying the rally in an Amorak –a brand new pick-up from Volkswagen. On the rest days I will have the opportunity to test the car on the dusty roads of Chile."
In January, the Dakar Rally will be crossing the borders of Argentina and Chile rigorously. Rudolf Schenker will join the race in Antofagasta, Chile. At the same time, the producers of the new upcoming Scorpions album will be sweating in their snug studio in Sweden and working on the end-mix. However, thanks to the newest technologies, Rudolf will be in constant virtual contact with them, in order to control the final mixes from abroad. So why the Dakar trip? Rudolf just recently preached in his book "Rock Your Life," "you have to see life as an adventure. Accept any challenge. And have fun doing it."

Def Leppard to get Animated, no, not Animalized!

Well, found this one hard to believe myself, but it's posted on Rueters news agency site no less ...?

It seems their recently negotiated new deal with music publishers Primary Wave, has opened another marketing ploy for the band!
It seems a cartoon TV show is on the cards ...
I guess if this is for real, I could've given the headline as, "Def Leppard follows Kiss path shock!"

Foo Fighter and Crooked Vulture man Dave Grohl says more Vulture music planned

Grohl claims that Them Crooked Vultures, his band featuring Queens Of The Stone Age’s Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, is a long term project.
The story was posted on the BBC's website this morning:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/music/newsid_10000000/newsid_10003500/10003590.stm

The 'oddly(?)' mixed supergroup released their self-titled debut album in November to much applause from fans and media alike.
He sees no reason why Foo Fighters and Them Crooked Vultures, can't run side by side, as he went on to say, “I wouldn’t want to stop doing it - it’s a fun band to be in.”
Let's see what comes next!

Well, really not too much else floating around today to share, if anything of note comes up today later though, I will share it as a fresh update. :)

One final thing, different area altogether but very tragic news from Hollywood in the death of young actress Brittany Murphy aged just 32.
Another starlet, well, she was already more than that with a long string of movies to her name.
Tragic loss indeed of such a great young talent.
Many news sites have covered it, but here's just one story on the BBC.

Sympathies and thoughts go out to her family.

News updates December 20th, 2009 ..., yep, a little late too!

Message from Ronnie James & Wendy Dio

With Ronnie James Dio currently undergoing treatment for his recently diagnosed stomach cancer, 2009 has turned out to be a very tough year for both Ronnie James Dio and his very devoted wife and manager Wendy.
Today they posted the following message to all the friends and fans that have been so supportive:

Happy holidays from Ronnie James Dio - Current mood: thankful

Happy holidays everyone,

I'd like to take the time to thank everyone for the most wonderful gifts I have ever received. The list includes your good wishes, your prayers, your support, your tears and laughter, your anger and rejoicing, and most of all the unwavering love you've bestowed upon me.

I guess I've always felt that we were one person and that you've allowed me to be our spokesman, but until this time of my greatest peril the truth was perhaps slightly hidden. It is hidden no more.

Together we' shall face the foe and live on to climb higher mountains and explore greater magic. Together we cannot fail. Please accept my never ending love and dedication to you all.
So it is written, and so it shall be.

MAGIC,

FROM RONNIE JAMES DIO

Frontiers Records to release GIANT’s come-back album “Promise Land” on February 26th in Europe and March 9th in the USA.

December 2009 – GIANT, the powerhouse Rock quartet, now formed by founding members David Huff and Mike Brignardello, together with Terry Brock and John Roth, will unleash their highly anticipated fourth album “Promise Land” on the international markets.

Formed by brothers Dann and David Huff, together with the experienced Jazz-Rock keyboardist Alan Pasqua and Nashville session bass player Mike Brignardello, Giant would soon become, with the release of their debut album “Last of The Runaways” (A&M Records, 1989), one of the most respected trademark bands of the Melodic Hard Rock scene. Following countless live performances, the band recorded the follow-up “Time to Burn” (Epic, 1991), an album still regarded as a main source of influence for many Melodic and Hard Rock bands nowadays.

With the sudden change of musical climate and after another World tour without Pasqua, Giant disbanded, with their members becoming involved again in different projects. Particularly Giant’s frontman and lead guitarist Dann Huff went on to become one of the most in-demand producers of our era, working in the Rock, Pop and Country Music with countless artists including Shania Twain, Megadeth, Faith Hill, Madonna and Bon Jovi.

In 2001, the Italian uprising Melodic Rock indie Frontiers Records, prompted Giant to release “III”, an album that would landmark the rise the new Melodic Rock scene, particularly in Europe.

Unfortunately Dann’s busy schedule along with the other members’ commitments, made the reunion impossible to carry on as planned. However the vision of bringing back Giant as a living band unit, with a recording and touring line-up and with of course the possibility to offer the enormous legacy of the music produced was developed, until it became apparent that Dann Huff could not be a full part of this concept, even though he loved everything that Giant was. Thus original members, drummer David Huff and bassist Mike Brignardello, started an endless research for the right musicians that could be part of a renewed Giant line-up. And in the end the choice fell on singer extraordinaire Terry Brock (Strangeways, Seventh Key) and John Roth (Winger) on guitars.

In April 2009 the band started the writing and the recording sessions of the new album, with Dann Huff himself participating to the sessions, co-writing with the new line-up members the haunting ballad Our Love and the straight out rockers Double Trouble, Plenty of Love, Save Me. He offered songs from his catalogue, such as the album title-track, Through My Eyes (both co-written with Mark Spiro) and Two Worlds. He also later guested on lead guitars on Save Me and Believer (Redux), the latter being a song written by Erik Martensson and Robert Sall of new Melodic Rock sensations W.E.T. with Miqael Persson (with two more: Never Surrender and Prisoner of Love fruit of the Martensson/Persson collaboration).

“We have worked so hard and we are very happy and proud of this record, along with Dann”, says David Huff and truly the production and band members songwriting and performances shine all over the album!

“Promise Land” includes the following songs:
Believer (Redux); Promise Land; Never Surrender; Our Love; Prisoner of Love; Two Worlds; Plenty of Love; Through My Eyes; I’ll Wait For You; Dying To See You; Double Trouble; Complicated Man*, Save Me. Also includes “The Making of Promise Land” documentary - interactive multimedia bonus.

*Bonus track only available in the first pressing in digipak
“Promise Land” was mixed by Ben Fowler (Van Zandt, Cher, Meat Loaf) and mastered by Joe Palmaccio (3 Grammy Awards won) .

New material from Ozzy Osbourne in June ..., 2010? 2011?

Well, it's a really slight update one from the wild Oz man nonetheless!
Posted at his site - http://www.ozzy.com/news - yesterday came this announcement:

New Ozzy Album!
Ozzy Osbourne will be releasing a new album called "Soul Sucka!"
The album will be released in June, and will include songs “Let It Die”, “Soul Sucka” and “Diggin’ Me Down”.

Stay tuned to Ozzy.com for more info!
http://www.ozzy.com/

Seriously, that's it, nothing more about who's involved or anything else.
Funny that it says the release date will be in June, doesn't say if it's 2010 or later though ...

An update of a different kind from Carl Palmer.

Classic prog rock drummer Carl Palmer (E.L.P., Asia, Qango, etc) has been involved in something away from his recent Asia activities and no, it's not E.L.P. rehearsals for next years reunion festival show either!
Read on, this posted at his site on Friday 18th December: http://www.carlpalmer.com/

Carl has been working at Solent University over the last year with Andrew Cross who has been involved with the main promotional film for the Euro Tunnel in the UK. This film can still been seen in London today and was given great acclaim. Carl's work with Andrew is completely different as you can imagine!

They have also made a film on drum solos that is done in a very artistic way. It has to be seen to be believed. You will see it some time very soon in 2010. The film is running about 40 minutes long, comprised of 5 different drum solos by Carl – all filmed at Solent University. Carl will be back at Solent in 2010 teaching in the percussion department and has already given a Lecture at Solent earlier this year on the music business.

Gregg Rolie to get out on the road and remind Santana fans, how They remember the band ...

The full story on this can be found by following the link at the bottom of this piece, but it seems, Gregg Rolie doesn't think Senor Carlos Santana is giving the fans how he believes, they want to remember Santana!

Rolie has not so long ago released his latest album, a live recording from his show at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in 2007 ... Hmm, not so recent huh ...
Anyway, it's a 12 track album, featuring 2 tracks each over 10 minutes long "As The Years Go Passing By" and "Soul Sacrifice," along with other lengthy cuts and Santana classics such as "Black Magic Woman," "Evil Ways," "Oye Como Va" and more!

For more on this and Rolie's thoughts, check it out here:

Thin Lizzy - Are You Ready? - Live @ Rockpalast 1981.

Thin Lizzy - Are You Ready? - Live @ Rockpalast 1981.

OK, so most people that know me, know I have a soft spot for anything Lizzy related.

Thing is, I did see them with Phil Lynott around 10 times live & it was always an event that lives fondly with me, each time.
Tragic that today, they still don't get the recognition that they really deserved.

So then to this DVD, well here's the thing ..., yeah I like it I really do, but it features, perhaps in the eyes of most die hard Lizzy fans, their least favorite lead player, in Snowy White.
Snowy was never really the get in your face player that say Robbo was or Sykes or even Moore when he was onboard.

Thing is, you can't take away the guys' involvement in what many people who weren't previously fans, actually found appealing enough to investigate further, but then he also joined at the same time as Darren Wharton became involved.
Anyway, you want to know about the DVD. Bad news first for Lizzy fans, there's no bonus material here, although it still runs at just a little under a 2 hour set from the band, still seriously showing their resilience.

This line up features the long standing trio of Phil Lynott (RIP) Bass / Lead Vocals and plenty of charisma (!), trusty sidekick and phenomenal drummer Brian Downey and MR. US of A Scott Gorham who joined in 1974 after original guitarist Eric Bell departed.

There are 7 songs from the Snowy White era of the band included here in the 19 played, the rest are old fave's of course.

Opening with Are You Ready to flashbombs as Lizzy always did, whether with Jailbreak or something else they wanted you to know, the boys were back!
Genocide from Chinatown follows before 2 killers in Waiting For An Alibi & Jailbreak, great stuff!

OK, Trouble Boys is here next & I remember buying the single (45), when this first came out before Renegade & I hadn't heard it and I have to say, at the time I was stunned, shocked! Lizzy plays Quo? Well, a 12 bar type pop / rocker was strange choice and I believe it was actually a Rockpile song. It was written by Billy Bremner. Maybe this was Phil's way of a tribute to his hero Elvis. Suffice to say, the crowd is a little quiet here, in fact in a lot of this the crowd was pretty tame.

Don't Believe A Word get's things back on the right path before the guys play the b-side of the Trouble Boys single, Memory Pain, which is a slow moody piece. Hmmm, they should've had Still In Love With You right here at this point, better choice for sure but ...

Phil talks about a subject he knew all too well before next track Got To Give It Up, which so many of us wish he had taken his own advice on.

Chinatown & new song at the time Hollywood follow, before the double barrelled barrage of Cowboy Song / Boys Are Back In Town really catches the band in their stride.
Suicide is served up next, great classic Lizzy before Black Rose tells us the legends of long ago with sheer class, Scott Gorham taking most of the lead work.
Sugar Blues was a great track off Chinatown & presents itself here next, followed closely by crowd singalong Baby Drives Me Crazy.

Three great songs finish the set in Rosalie, a track listed as Desaster, which in fact is Angel Of Death to appear on Renegade and set closer, Emerald.

Bottom Line:

This is a rare piece of Lizzy live footage, as it's Snowy White alongside Scott Gorham, so in that fact alone it's pretty special.
The lighting and sound of the performance isn't the best, there is clearly some tape trouble in places, as it's grainy here and there, but even with Phil's great performance, he was clearly sick at the time.

Still worth getting? Heck yeah, it is, but then I am a Lizzy fan!

Rating: 4/5 for me, even with the quality flaws, it’s a great piece of history.
