Newman - The Art of Balance CD review

Newman – The Art of Balance (Chrome Dome)

So, how does an artist that’s released 7 impressive previous albums, 5 through a genre specific label and 2 other self financed, again strong releases …., follow that?
He does it again!

Yes, Steve Newman the man behind the band Newman, has conjured up another gem, off his own back in The Art of Balance and after getting himself and his new live band, much praise at last years UK Z-Rock festival and guest slot to John Waite, he did himself a world of good! That praise it seems has this year earned him a place at the UK’s now premier melodic rock event, Firefest in 2010.

In addition to that he’s got a slot at this years Cambridge Rock Festival, along with a few more live shows as well, so 2010 looks like the year Newman will more than prove themselves over past years when there weren't so many live gigs from the band.
From what Steve has told me, he's very happy with the new live Newman band, so catch them live if you can!

He’s certainly got a great new album to plug too, yes The Art of Balance with it’s very clever and dare I say it, pretty cover -There I said it! – is one to go and get!

He open’s the album in a similar fashion to his Heaven Knows album, with some radio broadcast compilations telling of the deaths of stars such as Elvis, Michael Hutchence, Kurt Cobain and Michael Jackson as the intro to ‘Hero To Zero.’ Something that’s predominantly clear on this album, is how strong a presence the bass playing has here, much more so than before.

Anyway, that aside it’s a great rocking song with Steve Newman playing some of his finest lead work here, but also, what strong hooks too. Something he seems to have no trouble with pulling off at all.

‘Edge of the World’ starts with just vocals, some deft keyboard touches, then …, it’s that bass again! Then the song launches and just grows bigger and bigger and with great structure and tasty solo work again.
Love it!

Next track, ‘Endless’ in a similar way to the previous track starts kind of laid back, before building with the drums, easing back a little with the verse and the chorus just kills with it’s urgency and hook strength and then he takes it further to another level, in the mid section before coming back with that strong chorus repeating. Great!

‘The Miracle’ is a mid paced track, that at first didn’t grab me but with further plays, it’s showing it’s growing strength and now it’s grown with each listen and proved it’s place here and the mans vocals never seem to amaze how he’ll throw something different in the mix, with his phrasing and it just adds a little bit more with each album.

Power ballad time then, with next track ‘Stay With Me’ and it’s an area Steve Newman has no trouble with as he eases through more hook lines and big choruses.

Now Steve don’t get upset, but I have to say it …. ‘Tumble Down’ starts with a sound not unlike something Journey would do, with a big impact before getting into a chug along verse and then the pace picks up for an uptempo chorus, and goes back and forth this way before solo time comes along and off he soars!

Keyboard arpeggios start ‘Wish You Well,’ before the song comes on with a tight, snappy verse and again good chorus but perhaps not as strong a song as the previous 6 tracks, but still good stuff.
‘Find My Heart’ starts with some breathy vocals and slow verse before the chorus kicks in strongly and yes, the song grows nicely.

Next track, ‘Your Surrender’ seems to take Newman in a slightly different direction, with the structure of the song, still a good, easier going pop rocker.
‘Break It Again’ starts slow with guitar used to good effect and again, this track wasn’t grabbing me so much initially but on further plays I really like this song.

Tell me, is that a ballad I hear?! ‘Forever’ is a strong ballad that put simply, just takes things down a little and Newman take their foot off the accelerator just for a little while. Nice one again!

Closing track is ‘Stronger’ and it’s a good mid to up tempo paced, edgy pop rocker, that's well structured initially, then it takes a bit of a back seat and Mr. Newman allows himself a little longer solo this time than previous and this then takes the song out to almost 7 minutes. Sweet stuff!
So yes, I do like this album and yes Steve Newman deserves credit here for sure, as he has indeed come up with a good one ..., yes yet again!

It’s a very good and strong release with some very good guitar work throughout, strong vocals too and this  should certainly make fans of the band very happy and also they should look forward to some Newman live dates with 2 festival dates lined up and some select other dates being confirmed too! - In the UK only unfortunately!

OZZY OSBOURNE TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM "SCREAM" JUNE 15 ON EPIC RECORDS

THE ALBUM’S FIRST SINGLE, “LET ME HEAR YOU SCREAM” TO HAVE ITS WORLD PREMIERE TONIGHT, WEDNESDAY APRIL 14, ON CBS-TV’S “CSI: NY”

OZZY TO EMBARK ON AN 18-MONTH WORLD TOUR, WITH NEWS ABOUT OZZFEST TO EMERGE NEXT WEEK

This will be the SCREAM heard around the world.

OZZY OSBOURNE will release SCREAM — his first album in almost three years and 10th studio album overall — June 15 via Epic Records. Produced by OZZY and Kevin Churko, both of whom did the same honors for OZZY’s 2007 worldwide million-seller Black Rain, the album will feature the first single "Let Me Hear You Scream."
A preview of "Let Me Hear You Scream" can be experienced here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJlnbCjtu9I

The multi-platinum, GRAMMY Award-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer recorded most of SCREAM at his Los Angeles home studio, The Bunker, and co-wrote all the songs, primarily with Churko. Notably, the album marks the first appearance of OZZY’s new guitar player, Gus G.

OZZY’s band also features bassist Blasko, drummer Tommy Clufetos and keyboardist Adam Wakeman. In addition to “Let Me Hear You Scream,” the album’s confirmed tracks are: "Diggin Me Down", "Let It Die", "Soul Sucker", "Fearless", "I Want It All", "Time", "Crucify" and “I Love You All."

OZZY will also embark on an 18-month world tour (dates TBA) in support of SCREAM, with news about OZZFEST to emerge next week.

OZZY recently stormed onto a non-music chart with his autobiography I AM OZZY (Grand Central Publishing) — the rock icon’s unbelievable story told, for the first time, in his hilarious, witty, and inimitable voice — debuting at #2 on The New York Times best-sellers list amid glowing reviews.

JUDAS PRIEST SET TO GET YOUR WEEK STARTED OFF RIGHT WITH TWO PROGRAMS AIRED ON HD NET THIS SUNDAY NIGHT

Find yourself dreading going back to work or school most Sunday nights? Well, Judas Priest is offering to blow away any Sunday blues you may be experiencing on the evening of April 18th, when two kick-ass Priest programs will air on HD NET at 6:25pm EST and 6:55pm EST, respectively. First up will be ‘The Making of British Steel,’ as all four original members look back on how they created one of the most influential (and biggest selling) heavy metal records of all time. With clips and stories of the entire process thirty years later, this special is a music lover's dream. And immediately following will be ‘Judas Priest Live: British Steel 30th Anniversary Special,’ which sees the group play the entire classic ‘British Steel’ album in its entirety (as well as other Priest classics) from the Hard Rock Seminole Arena in Hollywood, Florida.

The latter live performance will also be included as a DVD with the upcoming ‘British Steel 30th Anniversary,’ which is set for release on May 11th. Long considered one of heavy metal’s all-time classic albums, ‘British Steel’ (originally released in 1980) spawned such Priest classics as “Breaking the Law” and “Living After Midnight,” and is pound for pound arguably one of Priest’s strongest and most potent recording from front to back.

‘British Steel 30th Anniversary’ will be made available as two different versions - one that will be available online and in stores, as well as one that will be sold exclusively through the group’s site (which features the ‘British Steel’ CD and the live DVD, as well as a CD which is the “audio counterpart” of the DVD - minus one track). Get ready to break the law once more with the mighty Priest!

30 Years on, Roger Waters tours The Wall again

It's now been a while since Roger Waters officially left Pink Floyd and went it alone, that said, the guy has always pulled in various talented muso's to join him on the road, each time he tours.
Well, it's now been 30 years since Pink Floyd's The Wall was let loose and now Waters want to tour it again, why ..?
Read on in his own words!

Roger Waters, 2010

I recently came across this quote of mine from 22 years ago:

"What it comes down to for me is this: Will the technologies of communication in our culture, serve to enlighten us and help us to understand one another better, or will they deceive us and keep us apart?”

I believe this is still a supremely relevant question and the jury is out. There is a lot of commercial clutter on the net, and a lot of propaganda, but I have a sense that just beneath the surface understanding is gaining ground. We just have to keep blogging, keep twittering, keep communicating, keep sharing ideas.

30 Years ago when I wrote The Wall I was a frightened young man. Well not that young, I was 36 years old.
It took me a long time to get over my fears. Anyway, in the intervening years it has occurred to me that maybe the story of my fear and loss with it’s concomitant inevitable residue of ridicule, shame and punishment, provides an allegory for broader concerns.: Nationalism, racism, sexism, religion, Whatever!
All these issues and ‘isms are driven by the same fears that drove my young life.

This new production of The Wall is an attempt to draw some comparisons, to illuminate our current predicament, and is dedicated to all the innocent lost in the intervening years.
In some quarters, among the chattering classes, there exists a cynical view that human beings as a collective are incapable of developing more ‘humane’ ie, kinder, more generous, more cooperative, more empathetic relationships with one another.
I disagree.
In my view it is too early in our story to leap to such a conclusion, we are after all a very young species.
I believe we have at least a chance to aspire to something better than the dog eat dog ritual slaughter that is our current response to our institutionalized fear of each other.

I feel it is my responsibility as an artist to express my, albeit guarded, optimism, and encourage others to do the same. To quote the great man, ” You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.”

BRET MICHAELS RUSHED INTO EMERGENCY SURGERY

Moments before he was to take the stage last night (April 11th) in San Antonio, Doctors at Sea World urged Bret Michaels to go to the hospital as the singer had been suffering all day from severe stomach pains and what was assumed to be a severe case of the flu. After further examination by doctors in San Antonio it was determined that the singer was suffering from an acute appendicitis. He was rushed into emergency surgery at 1:00 a.m.. According to doctors, Michaels, who remains in the hospital, is doing well and beginning the recovery process.

Michaels who has been known to perform under extreme conditions that would make most performers cancel, will unfortunately have no choice but to reschedule some of his April tour dates. A listing of all dates being rescheduled will be posted to his website in the coming days.

BILLY IDOL - NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED

BILLY IDOL TO FOLLOW OVERSEAS SUMMER TOUR WITH CROSS COUNTRY U.S. DATES

Following his overseas appearances of major European festivals, British singer-songwriter and rock icon BILLY IDOL will hit the road with a six-week U.S. tour kicking off August 5 in Washington. Tour stops include Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas and Las Vegas, among others. For this tour, IDOL will be joined by his longtime guitarist Steve Stevens, Stephen McGrath on bass and Derek Sherinian on keyboards as well as his recently announced new bandmates: acclaimed guitarist Billy Morrison and drummer Jeremy Colson.
This tour marks the legendary rocker’s first U.S. tour since 2008. ....

On these dates IDOL will be performing classics from his storied career. As leader of the group responsible for starting a youth cult, Generation X, he was one of the original British punks who gave the rock establishment a good kick up the arse with such classics as "Ready, Steady, Go," "Wild Youth," "Your Generation" and "Dancing With Myself," the latter of which marked the transition to IDOL's solo career when it appeared in remixed version on his 1981 DON'T STOP EP. ....

Other show-stoppers will likely include hits from the Grammy and MTV nominee’s multi-platinum selling career including “Hot In The City,” “White Wedding,” “Eyes Without A Face,” “Flesh For Fantasy,” “To Be A Lover” and the #1 smash “Mony Mony.” He long ago found a way to take that sneering punk attitude into the pop and rock mainstream, carving out songs that have lasted a lifetime. All of these classics are included on 2008’s The Very Best Of Billy Idol: Idolize Yourself, a career-spanning CD, Deluxe Edition CD/DVD and digital collection (Capitol/EMI). His immortal “Rebel Yell” was also featured on 2008’s Guitar Hero® World Tour game. In 2009, Eagle Rock Entertainment released IDOL’s first in-concert DVD “In Super Overdrive Live” (filmed at the Congress Theatre in Chicago). ....
