Rock News for Friday 24th September, 2010

Hi all, don't worry the news is coming ....!
I just thought I'd post a note here as something, I guess is appearing more and more obvious to me with this site.
It seems when I just post news here, I don't get as many visitors as I do if I "only" post a CD, DVD, gig review or interview - and yes, I know those have been thin on the ground. You have no idea how much work it is searching around sometimes for those news stories!
So here's the thing and I'd really welcome your comments at the bottom of today news post if you could or feel free to email me: alun_williams@comcast.net

To perhaps get more focus on what it seems you all like more to read, I may start to reduce the news items, to simply what I receive in terms of official press releases from my various sources.
That way, I can get through more of the CD reviews that I'm getting further and further behind on - I'm typing this at 11pm by the way ... - as the day job is more and more demanding lately and I do have a family too so my time to update the site is often very limited.
Of course, if the demand here increases more I may look at bigger things ... ;-)
Please let me know your thoughts, if it seems no one cares either way, then I'll just go ahead with my focus on more reviews and less news.
Thanks folks! So, here's those news items for now! Cheers, Al.
Journey new album details ...

Well, I guess 'those details' are really ..., still on the way!
Journey have just, OK a few days ago ..., posted the following news update on their site:

September 20, 2010 - NEW ALBUM COMING IN 2011

Journey is very happy to announce that a brand new album will be coming sometime in 2011 as well as new tour dates! Stay tuned right here for all the latest news!

Kind of disappointing really ... How little detail! No title? No month of release given? Will it be Spring, Summer or Fall?
I'd place money I guess on it being Spring, with summer tour dates to follow. Historically it's when Journey have most successful with touring.
We'll see ... Sorry to get your hopes up, now you can feel as disappointed as I was, after getting excited to see the headline at the site, then clicking on it revealed nothing else new and no more details on it. :(

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of THE POODLES live package including the “No Quarter” CD and “In The Flesh” DVD on November 5th 2010.

Having carved in stone their reputation as prime time entertainers with the release of three acclaimed studio albums and over 350 shows in the entire Europe in the past few years, not counting Gold and Platinum record awards in their home country, THE POODLES close the first chapter of their musical adventure and set their sails for the next step.

As a tribute to the first years on the road, THE POODLES offer the fans a live package including a CD and a DVD recorded during the “Clash of the Elements” tour in 2009, which portrays the band in the most natural environment: the live show. “The high points for us as a band is anytime we go on stage”, says guitar player Henrik Bergqvist. “This may sound like somewhat of a cliché but it is no less true. It doesn't matter if we play a crowd of 10.000 people at Graspop or in front of a handful on a rainy November Monday in Copenhagen, those are the moments we relish and live for. We've had so many special moments on stage over the past couple of years that it seems impossible to single even a few of them out. Having said this, some special moments can certainly be seen on the live DVD and heard on the live CD”.

“We are very proud of how the live CD and live DVD turned out and we feel that they really shows what the band is like on stage” continues Bergqvist, “being able to watch a DVD of your favourite band is great and there are a few really nice ones out there, but the connection that takes place between the band and the crowd during live shows cannot be formatted to the screen. You can catch a glimpse of it, but to experience a band live will always be different from listening to or viewing a recording of that band. Have a look and see for yourselves, though!”

Aptly titled “In The Flesh” the DVD is a real in deep look at the Poodles style of life with in-deep interviews, that present each band member, behind-the stage instant footage and a collection of the promo videoclips shot for the “Clash of the Elements” promotion. In addition, a selection of the band’s classic cuts performed live shows that the Poodles are delivering the goods when the play live. The live cd, soundtrack of the DVD, plus the song “Lullaby For Jimmy” as cd exclusive, shows that behind the look and the words there is a solid band playing great music!

Henrik concludes: “The future plans for The Poodles is closely connected to the band's cooperation with Frontiers Records. The band expects to play for an ever expanding audience as a result of it and take the mission of Heavy Metal to virgin lands. We want to see our beloved fans again on the road and make new friends too. The future is bright for us, and that's good because we already wear shades!”

The live CD “No Quarter” tracklisting includes:

Too Much Of Everything; Caroline; Seven Seas; Metal Will Stand Tall; Like No Tomorrow; One Out Of Ten; Lullaby For Jimmy; Drum Solo; Echoes From The Past; Thunderball; I Rule The Night; Night Of Passion; Flesh & Blood; Line Of Fire.

And so to the DVD ....

The Live DVD “In The Flesh” table of contents include:
Movie: Introduction; Stockholm, Party & Fun; About The Poodles; Metal Standing Tall; The Director & Crew; Being On Top; Jakob; Henrik; Pontus; Kicken; The First Five Rows; Tribute To The Fans; End Credits.

Concert: Too Much Of Everything; Caroline; Seven Seas; Metal Will Stand Tall; Like No Tomorrow; One Out Of Ten; Echoes From The Past; Thunderball; I Rule The Night; Night Of Passion; Flesh & Blood; Line Of Fire.

Extras: Like No Tomorrow (Video); I Rule The Night (Video); In The Flesh (Video); Warrior (The Movie Trailer); Majestic Film And Metal Warriors

The DVD will be released in NTSC Region Free format with Screen 16:9 and Mix in 2.0.
There will also be a limited release of a luxury packaging including the live CD “No Quarter” and the DVD “In The Flesh” is a luxury digipak edition.

“In The Flesh” trailer can be enjoyed following this link on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8lm1IaKcsQ

The songs “One Out Of Ten” and “Caroline” can exclusively be listened in full in streaming on the Frontiers Web radio. Tune in at: www.frontiers.it/webradio

Cult movie-master Rob Zombie to partner with Paranormal Activity team for next film LORDS OF SALEM

HOLLYWOOD, CA (September 23, 2010) - In an announcement made today, Haunted Movies partner Jason Blum unveiled plans for the company’s next picture, The Lords of Salem, to be directed by Rob Zombie from a script by Zombie.
Set in modern-day Salem, the film involves the demonic return of a 300-year-old coven of witches.

This is the third entry in a new horror slate deal between Haunted Movies and Alliance Films. The first picture to come out of this partnership is Insidious, written and directed by the original Saw team of James Wan and Leigh Whannel, and starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne. Insidious recently premiered in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival on September 14 and immediately was the subject of a bidding war, which was won by Sony Pictures Worldwide, who will handle the release of the film later this year. The second picture is The Bay, helmed by Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson and currently shooting in South Carolina.

Octane, IM Global's genre arm, is handling international sales on the Haunted Movies slate, including on The Lords of Salem.

Zombie has experienced great commercial success as the writer and director of five feature films, and as one of the defining rock music icons of his generation. He’s been nominated for 7 Grammys and has sold over 15 million albums worldwide. His film credits include the cult smash House of 1000 Corpses (Lionsgate 2003) and its landmark sequel The Devil’s Rejects (Lionsgate 2005), the animated film The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (Film Roman 2009), and the record-breaking blockbuster re-imagining of John Carpenter’s Halloween (Dimension 2007), along with its sequel Halloween 2 (Dimension 2009), which gave new life to the franchise.

Haunted Movies is a partnership between Jason Blum, Steven Schneider, and Oren Peli, the same team behind the box-office phenomenon Paranormal Activity (Paramount 2009) and Paranormal Activity 2 (set for release by Paramount this October).

The Lords of Salem will be produced by Blum, Schneider, and Peli, Zombie, and Zombie’s producing partner Andy Gould. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones of Automatik will executive produce.

Zombie currently is about to embark on a three week tour of debauchery with Alice Cooper on The Halloween Hootenanny Tour with special guests Murderdolls. The tour kicks off in Los Angeles at the Gibson Amphitheatre on Thursday, September 30th and will criss-cross the USA with a tour de force of ghoulish s delights for your aural pleasure, giving the fans a show of a lifetime.

Rock News Update for Thursday 23rd, September, 2010

Steven Tyler accepts American Idol role, claims band mates are jealous?

What is the guy trying to do? Seriously!
He can't need the money, it has to simply be attention seeking?!
All the major news sites are making a really big deal out of one of TV most popular shows, 'American Idol' and that Aerosmith frontman - Although for how long now? - Steven Tyler has accepted one of the new judges positions, alongside Jennifer Lopez.
Obviously for the lead singer of one of the USA's most successful rock bands ever, to take on the role of a judge on a TV talent show ..., well I guess it is a big deal!
You can check out a clip from Tyler talking to show host, Ryan Seacrest here on CNN:

Meanwhile entertainment site http://www.tmz.com/ has footage of Tyler being interviewed and the guy says this on the situation with his bandmates, just to stir up his bandmates a little more!
"With the band, we've been married for 40 years now (Five guys) which makes it even worse than women, and I could go for an hour and explain that. At first they were jealous, they heard it through the press and not through me. But then I said to them, 'Four months ago you were looking for another lead singer.' So things go up and down. I spent a stint in Betty Ford [clinic receiving treatment for substance abuse]. But as the band goes, we live on the tail of a comet. And I've been on tour with these guys for 40 years, and they've been judging me every day. And sometimes it hurt (A lot of times) most times, I came out through the wormhole stronger. So it's a real journey with those guys and they would say the same about me. I'm sure they're real happy for me; I mean, this is gonna do nothing more than take it all up another step or two. And it's good; I like it."

I don't know how the band will take this or maybe now the latest tour is behind them, Tyler has time for this, who knows?

GIN BLOSSOMS RETURN WITH 429 RECORDS DEBUT
“NO CHOCOLATE CAKE”

Chart Topping Band Prepare For September 28th Release

Pop rock hit-makers the Gin Blossoms have signed with 429 Records and are preparing for the release of their highly anticipated new album, “NO CHOCOLATE CAKE.” Known for creating indelibly melodic, Grammy-nominated Top Ten singles and platinum-selling albums, Gin Blossoms—Robin Wilson, Jesse Valenzuela, Scott Johnson and Bill Leen, are back and in peak form. The eleven new tracks were written, produced and performed by the band with the help of John Richardson (drums) and Danny Wilde on keyboards and additional production (of The Rembrandts). The first single, “Miss Disarray,” will be promoted at Hot Adult Contemporary radio outlets. “NO CHOCOLATE CAKE” is set for release in North America on September 28th on 429 Records.

Four years after the critically acclaimed “Major Lodge Victory,” Gin Blossoms have put together a seamless musical confection. Says Wilson “There’s just something about the way we play and sound together. It’s those songs and the sound we make that add up to something indefinable.”

1) Don’t Change For Me
2) I Don’t Want To Lose You Now

Motley Crue’s Vince Neil Set to Rock October’s LenMar Motorsports ADRL World Finals VI in Texas

Dallas, TX, September, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The American Drag Racing League (ADRL) and Gabe Reed Productions (GRP) are pleased to announce that rock legend Vince Neil of Motley Crue will perform a free concert during the LenMar Motorsports ADRL World Finals VI on Oct. 23.

The LenMar Motorsports ADRL World Finals and the prestigious Speedtech “Battle For The Belts” takes place on October 22-23 at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, TX, and Neil will be performing a 75-minute set in front of the capacity crowd on that Saturday evening between the semifinal and final rounds of eliminations.

A veteran rocker of more than 30 years, Neil has been the boisterous front man for Motley Crue, one of the most well-known rock bands in history. Neil’s latest solo effort, “Tattoos & Tequila,” has received rave reviews and his autobiography of the same title is a best seller. Motley Crue has sold more than 80 million albums worldwide and Neil has been at the forefront of that extreme lifestyle while performing classic hits like, “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Kickstart My Heart,” and “Dr. Feelgood.” Neil has long enjoyed a special relationship with the racing community and he jumped at the opportunity to perform in front of a huge audience at the Texas Motorplex. “This is a perfect marriage between Vince Neil and the excitement of ADRL drag racing,” promoter Gabe Reed said. “Both are all about living life to the limit and having a good time.”

Now in its sixth year, the ADRL is widely recognized as the nation’s premier sanctioning body for the sport of eighth-mile drag racing thanks to its innovative business model. Drag racing is regarded as one of the fastest growing sports in the world and the ADRL is at the forefront of that movement. Its unique complimentary ticket approach has led to unprecedented growth and capacity crowds at each of the 10 events on its annual national tour, and mixing rock n’ roll and drag racing is sure to attract a raucous crowd. “It’s going to be great for fans to experience all the memorable ADRL action and one of the greatest rock n’ roll legends during the same weekend,” ADRL President and CEO Kenny Nowling.

“By adding Vince Neil to the already amazing entertainment package the ADRL has to offer, this is sure to be one of the most sought after tickets in entertainment history, and they’re free!”

David Bowie "Rare and Unseen" on DVD 11/23

An icon's story told through truly rare and unseen archival footage
The next title in the 'Rare and Unseen' series looks at the British actor, producer and musician for five decades: David Bowie.

Most famous for his alter-ego, the ostentatious, androgynous "Ziggy Stardust" during the glam-rock era of the early 1970s, Bowie has continually reinvented his music and image and is regarded as an influential innovator, particularly in rock music. He has had numerous top ten hits, most notably China Girl, Modern Love, Starman, Space Oddity, Under Pressure and Let's Dance, amongst others. Bowie is also a multi-instrumentalist, singing vocals as well as playing Electric, Acoustic, and Twelve String Guitar, Keyboards, Alto, Tenor, Piano, Harmonica, Xylophone, Tambourine, Drums, Percussion and many other instruments, making him one of the most multi-talented musicians in the world.

Told through missing-believed-wiped archive interviews and rare and unseen footage, this insightful DVD is a worthy addition to any Bowie collection. Items genuinely unseen and never before appeared on DVD including film from the ITN archive. Includes lost and now restored TV interviews from the past and rare film of the singer talking about his career.

Featuring:
UNSEEN: RUSSELL HARTY interview- restored for 16:9
RARE: New York Interview 1999
UNSEEN: Candid admissions on drugs and the Berlin days
RARE: Press Conference performance
UNSEEN: Janet Street Porter backstage before gig
RARE: Rehearsal footage

.... And finally ...

Ronnie James Dio's house is up for sale ...

I guess it has to be a very sad thing for Wendy Dio to have to do, but the home that she shared with singing legend Ronnie James Dio (RIP) is up for sale, according to 'The Huffington Post.'
I'm sure with so many memories and personal history for her, it has to be tough to remain in the home with Ronnie now gone.
It's still extremely sad to accept for many of the fans and no doubt of course for Ronnie's family, with Ronnie ever obvious, youthful and humourous approach on all things.
You can check out more details on the house sale - More like a castle to be honest! - and view the home too and of course if you've just over $3M to spare, go ahead and place a bid!
It looks wonderful.

MARCO MENDOZA WELCOMES YOU TO ‘CASA MENDOZA’

NEW YORK – Bassist extraordinaire Marco Mendoza has unveiled his second solo album, “Casa Mendoza,” on Mascot Records.

“Casa Mendoza” is a Latin-flavored melodic rock record with a commercial edge that is sure to appeal to fans of any of Mendoza’s work.

“Being of Latin-American descent, I have always heard music with the Latin influence in it,” Mendoza said. “This album gave me the opportunity to experiment and to see how far I could take it. I hope that fans out there are open to the fact that music is comes from a lot of places, and that it shouldn't be put in a box. If it's good, it's good, regardless of genre.”

Top-notch musicianship shines through on Mendoza’s originals, as well as the covers he has selected for “Casa Mendoza.” “From the production process to the playing, everybody involved had a big influence on the record and I give them a lot of credit,” said Mendoza.

Mendoza is most famous for his work with rock and hard rock acts like Thin Lizzy, Blue Murder, White Snake, Ted Nugent, Lynch Mob, and Neal Schon and Soul SirkUS, but his vast repertoire of work goes beyond the rock genre. Mendoza has most recently been working on a project with Dolores O’Riordan from pop giants the Cranberries. When he’s not touring or otherwise working, Mendoza can often be found playing local Los Angeles jazz clubs with Joey Heredia and Renato Neto.
The highly-sought-after monster bassist has rejoined Thin Lizzy once more and will be touring in 2011.

“It has been a long journey through this business through the ups and downs,” Mendoza said. “Always having that spiritual connection, that sanctuary you can go to, and having all these experiences of working with some of the best musicians in the biz are what drive me to keep creating music."
The track listing for “Casa Mendoza” is:

1. Living for the City
2. Trouble
3. Suzy Q
4. You
5. Circle of Life
6. Kingdom of Paradise
7. Are you There

Frontiers Records is excited to announce the release of the third chapter of ALLEN / LANDE project entitled “The Showdown” on November 5th 2010.

ALLEN / LANDE represents the finest expression of Melodic Metal nowadays. With two world renowned singers, Jorn Lande (of Jorn and Masterplan) and Russell Allen (of Symphony X) sharing lead vocals, this project has become a staple among the fans of Hard Rock and Melodic Heavy Metal music. The first chapter of Jorn Lande and Russell Allen’s collaboration, “The Battle” was unleashed in September 2005 with unanimous acclaim from fans and critics alike. Many websites and magazines named it “Record of the Year”. Its success made it one of the most popular releases ever in Melodic Heavy Metal, thanks to beautiful, sweeping piano and keyboards, heavy guitar riffs, virtuoso guitar solos, hooky choruses and the vocal talents of two of the finest Heavy Metal vocalists around.

In spring 2007, the second chapter entitled “The Revenge” was released and met again with an amazing reaction from press and fans. Heavier and with a tighter production, thanks to the involvement of Dennis Ward (PINK CREAM 69, ANGRA, PLACE VENDOME) at the mix, the album excited the fans who loved the first chapter.

Now it is the turn of “The Showdown”, the anticipated third album of the studio project. “With two of the best singers in the business it’s easy to get inspiration to write good music” says the mastermind of the project, Swedish guitar player, songwriter and producer Magnus Karlsson, who adds “When it was decided that Russell and Jorn were going to sing on the first album I knew that if I could just write great songs and get the right mix it would have a very good chance to be a success”. Musically “The Showdown” sounds like “A mix of both previous releases with “The Battle” being more Melodic and “The Revenge” which was more in the Hard Rock direction”, according to Karlsson, who concludes “I’m more satisfied than ever with the songs and performances, but also because the mix by Achim Kohler (Primal Fear) is by far the best I ever had on any album!”

“The Showdown” cover art was designed once again by Rodney Matthews (Asia, Magnum, Diamond Head etc.) and includes the following tracks:

The Showdown; Judgement Day; Never Again; Turn All Into Gold; Bloodlines; Copernicus; We Will Rise Again; The Guardian; Maya; The Artist; Eternity; Alias (bonus track).
The videoclip shot for the song “Judgement Day” with Jorn Lande’s lead vocals can be watched on Youtube:

The songs “Judgement Day” and “The Showdown” can exclusively be listened in full in streaming on the Frontiers Web radio from September 21st.

The album will be exclusively be available in the CD digipak edition (first pressing), limited vinyl and digital download.

The Sacred Triangle: Bowie, Iggy & Lou 1971-1973 out on DVD November 23rd.

This Fascinating film examines the three men that changed music forever in the early 1970s.
By the second half of 1971 David Bowie was justifiably being branded a one-hit-wonder, Lou Reed was considered washed-up following a disastrous solo debut, and Iggy Pop was seen as merely a drug crazed ex-Stooge (Iggy and the Stooges) - the band having split the year before for reasons linked to his deepening habit. But a meeting of minds at the New York venue 'Max's Kansas City' in that year's closing months was the catalyst for an extraordinary turnaround of fortunes for these three musical geniuses, resulting in the most dramatic shift in musical style since the dawn of the rock age, fifteen years before.

This fascinating film investigates the era in which these brilliant, creative personalities worked most closely together. With the story told by those who were there at the time and via rare and classic film footage, plus recently discovered archive, seldom seen photographs and a host of other features, this programme reveals a time of incredible creativity, astonishing energy and a sublime chain of events that changed music forever.

Includes exclusive contributions from David's ex-wife Angie Bowie; Andy Warhol's Factory assistant Billy Name; MainMan Management vice president, Leee Black Childers; New York scenester Jayne [née Wayne] County and many others from the era in question.

KANSAS MERGE ROCK AND SYMPHONIC SOUNDS ON JUST-LAUNCHED TOUR, HONORED BY MASSIVE CROWD AT ALABAMA FOOTBALL GAME

As first reported several months ago, world renowned classic rockers Kansas have launched a highly anticipated "Collegiate Symphony Tour" (Presented by D'Addario), which in turn would help raise funds for school music programs. And the lads are certainly proving that they are men of their word, as they recently played to two packed houses at the University of Alabama. Additionally, the band was honored as musical guests during halftime at the Alabama vs. Penn State game (which Alabama won, 24-3). With a mammoth crowd of 106,000 looking on, spectators were treated to renditions of two Kansas classics performed by Alabama's Million Dollar Band - "Carry on Wayward Son" and "Point of Know Return." Video of the pep rally where band were guests and over 40,000 attended can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELN21WI4rgY

"We were extremely excited to have the opportunity to feature the members of the band Kansas as guests of the University of Alabama Million Dollar Band during the halftime show of the Alabama vs. Penn State football game," says Alabama's School of Music Director, Skip Snead. "These guys are one of the best-known, iconic groups of classic rock and it was a treat for the marching band members and all of the fans to have them introduced and honored during halftime."

Adds Kansas drummer Phil Ehart - "Standing in the middle of that stadium, surrounded by over 100,000 people, and the Million Dollar Band blasting away on 'Wayward Son' and 'Point of Know Return' was truly one of the most unique experiences of my life. It was goose bump time!"

During the 1970s, KANSAS went on to become one of the decade's most popular rock acts. The band - which is comprised of singer/keyboardist Steve Walsh, guitarist Rich Williams, bassist Billy Greer, violinist David Ragsdale, and drummer Ehart - continue to rock on to this very day.

With the success of the Alabama shows under their belt - 'Kansas Collegiate Symphony Tour' may point to the band's future. And Ehart agrees with this assessment - "This is going so well, that other schools are contacting us for 2011 and 2012. City orchestras are even calling us about doing the same for them. Kansas has always been a symphonic rock band. We have found our niche!"

BLUES ICON BUDDY GUY
SET TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM “LIVING PROOF”
ON OCTOBER 26TH

First Single “Stay Around A Little Longer” Features Legendary Bluesman B.B. King

New York, NY –Five time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Buddy Guy, will release his new album, Living Proof on October 26th. His 11th Silvertone/Jive studio release marks an historic first as it brings together the incomparable B.B. King and Guy on the introspective and moving lead single, “Stay Around a Little Longer.” The landmark single represents the first time that these two blues titans have ever joined together on a studio release.

Asked what he considers himself Living Proof of, Buddy Guy answers modestly. “Do you know how many guys I started out with who just threw up both hands and quit?” he says. “My first wife said to me, ‘It’s me or the guitar,’ and I picked up my guitar and left. We still laugh about that. But I’m still picking away at it, I don’t know nothing else.” In addition to the collaboration with B.B. King, Guy recruits fellow guitar legend Carlos Santana, who joins him on the slinky tune “Where The Blues Begins."

At 74-“years young,” he’s been a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound and a living link to that city’s halcyon days of electric blues. In a career than spans nearly 50 years he has received 23 W.C. Handy Blues Awards (the most any artist has received), the first annual Great Performer of Illinois Award, the Billboard magazine Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement, and the Presidential National Medal of Arts. Rolling Stone ranked him in the top 30 of its "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."

Recently, Buddy Guy wrapped shooting the “Stay Around A Little Longer” video with B.B. King in Las Vegas and just held “An Evening With Buddy Guy” at the Gammy Museum’s theater in Los Angeles where he discussed his storied career and performed a selection of songs. Right now the indefatigable musician is on tour throughout North America.
