News Update for Friday September 21st, 2012

Well, it's the weekend ... Well almost ..., close enough right?!
Listen, tonight we're off to see the current line-up of Lynyrd Skynyrd and it's probably been about five or six years since we saw them last, so I'm looking forward to it!

Sad news on the Black Country Communion front, but you'll have to scroll down and read on for the details, which are ..., er, vague!

Enjoy your weekend folks, cheers, Al

Black Country Communion cancel only UK show in January 2013

OK folks, yes, you read that headline right ...
I know, just yesterday I posted another update from the Black Country Communion band, which included details on that solitary show they were due to play in the New Year, in England.

Sad indeed that as soon as a press release comes out, promoting once again a 'single UK gig,' by the band, the very next day comes the message that the show is off!

I'm beginning to think that Glenn Hughes, amid his 'various' - Yes, not just one! Didn't help yourself there, now did you Glenn? - interviews saying that the upcoming and third release from the band, would most likly be the last, due to his frustration at lack of BCC touring, has now, most likely, quit the band.

Here's the press release from the band's UK management:

Black Country Communion, the Anglo-American rock group featuring Joe Bonamassa (guitar, vocals), Glenn Hughes (vocals, bass), Jason Bonham (drums), and Derek Sherinian (keyboards), today announced that their only UK concert at the Wolverhampton Civic on Saturday January 5th has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Planet Rock Radio launched a 48-hour ticket pre-sale on Wednesday 19th September. Customers who purchased tickets will receive a full refund, however if you have any queries, please email customerservice@eventim.co.uk.

The one-off concert was originally intended to be Black Country Communion’s only UK appearance in 2013. The band chose Wolverhampton due to their geographical and spiritual ties to the area (Glenn Hughes was born in Cannock, Jason Bonham was born in Dudley).

In 2011, Black Country Communion’s last studio album, “2”, scored the No.1 spot in the Official UK Rock Album Chart.

The band’s upcoming third album Afterglow, produced by Kevin Shirley, will be released in the UK by Mascot Records on Monday October 29th.

Singer, actor and best-selling author: Rock icon RICK SPRINGFIELD to release in Europe his new album "Songs from the End of the World" on Frontiers Records

For all his accomplishments as an actor, a best-selling author and the subject of a recent documentary, RICK SPRINGFIELD’s first love has always been music, since the first time he picked up a guitar at the age of 12 in his native Australia. That passion for writing and performing songs, as well as playing guitar, comes through loud and clear on his new album, “Songs for the End of the World” which gets a European release on Frontiers Records on November 2nd.

Collaborating on songs like the three-chord rocker “I Hate Myself,” the anthemic “Our Ship’s Sinking,” “Love Screws Me Up” and “Depravity” with his bass player Matt Bissonette, Springfield sets his sights on the possibilities of escaping the current, apocalyptic world situation in our closest relationships. In doing so, he employs the kind of self-effacement and ability to poke fun at himself as he demonstrated when putting his dog Lethal Ron on the cover of Working Class Dog or spoofing his image by playing a sleazy, drug-and-sex-crazed version of himself on Showtime’s dark comedy “Californication”. John Waite and Mr. Mister’s Richard Page appear as backup vocalists, along with Rick’s original guitarist, Tim Pierce, who hasn’t played on record with him since 1999’s “Karma”.

“There’s real feeling in it, but you can’t write about that stuff too seriously,” he says of his sometimes tongue-in-cheek approach to serious subjects. “In the end, it’s about the world in flames, but from a personalized viewpoint. I take what’s happening to me and place it in a universal context. It’s what I’ve always tried to do with my songwriting.”

With 25 million albums sold, 17 U.S. top-40 hits, including “Don’t Talk to Strangers”, “An Affair of the Heart”, “I've Done Everything for You”, “Love Somebody”, and “Human Touch”, as well as a 1981 Grammy® Best Male Rock Vocal win for his No. 1 single hit “Jessie’s Girl” behind him, Springfield has more to say with his latest new release, “Songs for the End of the World”.

Still playing nearly 100 live shows a year, Springfield’s bond with his audience is the subject of the recent documentary An Affair of the Heart, which came out earlier this year, winning special jury awards at both the Nashville and Florida Film Festivals. He also recently wrote and recorded a new song with Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters / Nirvana) as well as being a featured guest in Grohl’s new documentary about “Sound City,” the fabled San Fernando Valley recording studio.

His 2010 autobiography, Late, Late at Night…: A Memoir, for Simon & Schuster’s Touchstone imprint, entered The New York Times best-seller list at No. 13, hitting the Los Angeles Times and Publishers Weekly lists as well, with Rolling Stone recently naming it one of the Top 25 rock autobiographies of all time. In the book, Springfield revealed the life-long depression he’s battled throughout his career, a theme he returns to in such songs as “I Hate Myself” and “Love Screws Me Up.” “I’m not the shiny, happy guy people think I am from my role in General Hospital,” insists Springfield. “I tend to put that angst into my music.”

With “Songs for the End of the World”, Rick Springfield continues to do what he does best—applying his sardonic view to life as we live it today, offering a ray of hope in the midst of all the turmoil.

“The darker side of my nature creeps in and out, but so does a degree of optimism,” he says. “In the end, I believe that solace and healing can be found in the presence of someone who understands, loves and accepts you for who you are, even while these looming threats remain.”

Tracklisting of the European edition of “Songs for the End of the World” includes: Wide Awake; Our Ship’s Sinking; I Hate Myself; You And Me; Gabriel; A Sign of Life; My Last Heartbeat; Joshua; Love Screws Me Up; I Found You; Depravity; One Way Street ; Let Me In (Bonus Track); My DUI (Exclusive Bonus Track).
The Bug – album only I-tunes exclusive track

The first single Our Ship’s Sinking which features John Waite and Mr Mister’s Richard Page on background vocals can be streamed in its entirety on the Frontiers Records webradio

Dokken exploded out of the hotbed that was the hard rock and heavy metal scene in Los Angeles in the early '80s. Such classic albums as TOOTH AND NAIL, UNDER LOCK AND KEY and BACK FOR THE ATTACK were all certified multi-platinum, with songs like "Alone Again," "Just Got Lucky," "Into the Fire," "It's Not Love" and "Dream Warriors" still being regarded as amongst the genre's finest.
Dokken was one of the first groups to sell a million copies of their DVD "Unchain The Night."  The group continues to tour the world extensively and has shared the stage with AC/DC, Metallica, Aerosmith, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Kiss, Scorpions, Bon Jovi and many more.  To date, the band has sold upwards of 10 million albums worldwide.
The group has been nominated for a Grammy as well as an American Music Award.
In 1988, Don was awarded the keys to the city of Los Angeles by Mayor Tom Bradley declaring January 27th as "Dokken Day" for his charity contributions to the Los Angeles Children's Hospital.
Dokken is: Don Dokken (vocals), Mick Brown (drums), Jon Levin (guitar) and Sean McNabb (bass).

BCC has announced their only concert of 2013 at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall in Wolverhampton, England on Saturday, January 5, 2013.

The concert is significant, as it is based in the heart of the Black Country, where both Glenn Hughes and Jason Bonham grew up as kids.
For more information and tickets, visit Planet Rock (
www.planetrock.com) which will launch an exclusive 48-hour ticket pre-sale on Wednesday Sept. 19.

Ed - Please note: Sorry folks, only got to see this US Press Release late Wednesday, but if you read Monday's update, you would've already seen the link, from the UK press release.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday Sept. 21 via
www.thegigcartel.com.

Like BCC’s previous albums (2010’s self-titled debut and 2011’s ‘2’), Afterglow was produced by Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, the Black Crowes), who formed the band after watching Bonamassa and Hughes perform together at a Guitar Center event in November 2009.
Afterwards, Shirley got in touch with Sherinian and Bonham to round out the group and they released their debut album in September 2010.

Classic Rock Magazine called it “Possibly the best hard rock album of 2010.”
A mere nine months later, the group released their sophomore album ‘2’.

Guitar World named it #12 in their Top 50 Albums of 2011; Planet Rock Radio listeners crowned them Best New Band; in November, BCC scooped up the Breakthrough Award at the Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards.

In terms of content, Afterglow expands upon the progression that took place between ‘BCC’ and ‘BCC2’. “It’s a deeper album, musically, than our first two albums, but it does not step away from the genre we’re in,” said Hughes, who wrote the bulk of the album’s 11 songs after BCC’s Summer Tour in 2011.

“I wanted this album to have more acoustic moments than the previous two.
I wanted to hear more of Derek [Sherinian] and I wanted an angelic side to the vocals as well as the more aggressive one, like on the songs ‘Crawl’ and ‘Midnight Sun’. Above all, I wanted more drama.”

Rock Guitar Daily’s Tony Conley says, “It sounds like there's a war going on… It rages with an unbridled passion unseen on the first two Black Country releases, and this passion adds immensely to the music.
Glenn Hughes has made the statement of a career - his voice is more powerful and under control than ever, his phrasing shakes, quivers, screams, and howls with rightful indignation…
His lyrics are as amazing, and they tell tales that could be heard in a variety of interpretations. Joe Bonamassa hits his strings like Ali hitting Sonny Liston - wicked accuracy and vicious intent that can't be hid.
These two titans are like a couple of super heroes fighting a war set up by some unseen bad guy... Afterglow is a huge record… it is Black Country rock at its best.”

Bonamassa compares the album’s sound to “a jet engine” and Shirley, considered the unofficial fifth member of the band, added, “When I finally managed to get them all to convene in a studio and they start playing, it's like everything I've ever loved about Rock.
Intense musicality from everyone, first and foremost; then bombast, self-indulgence - the kind that Jimmy Page made as the template for being a Rock Star - and then stunning sensitivity.”

To support the release, BCC is running a 6-episode web TV series which can be viewed here:

Vocalist David Van Landing will front Michael Schenker's band on the upcoming North American tour, which is scheduled to kick off on October 3 in Modesto, California.

David will be stepping in for Robin McAuley, who was originally slated to take part in the trek after recently reuniting with Schenker for their first full tour together in almost 20 years.
Van Landing, who has previously done three tours with MSG and had a short stint with CRIMSON GLORY, said: "I am just looking forward to getting out on the road again with the boys and seeing all my old friends and hopefully meet some new ones!!"

News of Joe Lynn Turner-Carmine Appice supergroup is a rumour

A new press statement from Joe Lynn Turner's management has just been released, it reads as follows:

On September 17, 2012, reports were posted on various websites
with what appeared to be "official news" from Ex-Rainbow/Deep Purple
singer Joe Lynn Turner (JLT) and Ex-Ozzy Osbourne/Vanilla Fudge
drummer Carmine Appice about a new band/project with Michael Anthony
(Van Halen, Chickenfoot).
Both Appice and Turner have officially dismissed this news as a rumour.

The musicians said that there was never any press release sent out by
either of their media representatives or their record companies.
While both of them agree that they have had casual conversations about
musicians they would like to work with, including Michael Anthony
this news of the formation of a "supergroup" is not official or confirmed.

Turner admits, "Carmine and I are longtime friends and we have talked
over the years about working together on future projects. These are
conversations musicians like us often have all the time. These
conversations are not 'official news' it is just casual talk.

Like many artists, we exchange ideas about people we would like to work
with if given the chance. Names like Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and
Michael Anthony are all musicians we both admire but we never released
any official news stating that we were planning to launch this so-called supergroup."

Turner and Appice would like to specifically apologize to bassist
Michael Anthony (Van Halen, Chickenfoot) and his fans for any
confusion this rumor or any casual conversations might have caused.

Appice confirms, "We had nothing to do with the publishing of any of
this news about this project and neither of us talked to any
journalists or media people 'on the record' about a possible
supergroup. Having said all this, Joe and I have worked together in
the past and can't rule out the possibility of working together in the
future."

The Keith Emerson Band, Three Fates Project

Release Date: October 30th 2012
Three Fates Project

The Keith Emerson Band • M√ľnchner Rundfunkorchester
Keith Emerson • Marc Bonilla • Terje Mikkelsen

Three Fates Project is unlike any previous album by keyboard legend Keith Emerson and pre-eminent rock guitarist and composer Marc Bonilla. It is a unique and dynamic inseparable hybrid of orchestral and rock unlike any that's ever been heard before.

Keith’s music has taken yet another step in a new direction with this album. Keith is truly a modern day composer, which is why Alberto Ginastera and Aaron Copland thought so highly of him - they recognized him as one of their kind.

The album contains both orchestral re-workings of ELP classics such as “Tarkus,” “The Endless Enigma,” “Abaddon's Bolero,” as well as Aaron Copland's “Fanfare For The Common Man,” Alberto Ginastera's “Malambo” and "American Matador" from Marc Bonilla’s second solo album, as well as brand new compositions: Emerson’s “After All Of This” and Marc Bonilla’s “Walking Distance,” and “The Mourning Sun.”
The album was recorded in Munich and Los Angeles over a nine- month period starting in the summer of 2011. It features the 70-piece M√ľnchner Rundfunkorchester, conducted by world-reknown Maestro, Terje Mikkelsen, who has been often referred to as "of of the few conductors with a rock 'n roll soul" and the Keith Emerson Band with veteran Emerson bassist, Travis Davis, and drummer, Troy Luccketta, from the multi-platinum band, Tesla.
