Van Halen story … New deal signed?

Both http://www.melodicrock.com/ and http://www.blabbermouth.net/ sites have posted this latest story / piece of news. The only flaw to it, is there’s no link to any website that verifies this event?!

The Warner/Chappell Music website does not include any of this info – At this time. – on this Van Halen story, so read it as you will?!
Feel free to look for yourself as there’s plenty of news there, just not on this!

Here's what both sites have published:

"Warner/Chappell Music has extended its administration agreements with two original members of the legendary rock band Van Halen, Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Under the agreement, Warner/Chappell will continue to administer their catalog of works.

The Grammy Award-winning Van Halen was formed in 1972 in Pasadena, California and released its first album in 1978, quickly becoming one of the most influential rock bands in history. In 2007, after more than three decades dazzling audiences with their energetic performances and establishing their catalog of songs as one of the most enduring in the history of popular music, Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

With 11 studio albums, Van Halen is the 19th best-selling group of all time in the U.S., according to the RIAA, with more than 56 million albums sold in the U.S., 10 of them certified platinum or multi-platinum, six albums that reached No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and two of them, "Van Halen" and "1984", achieving diamond certification. Van Halen has been nominated multiple times by the American Music Awards and, in 1992, won "Favorite Heavy Metal/Rock Album" for the album "For Unlawful Carnage Knowledge".

"It's fantastic to continue our relationship with Van Halen, which is one of the most enduring and successful partnerships within our roster of songwriters," said Scott Francis, President, Warner/Chappell Music, and Chairman and CEO, Warner/Chappell Music U.S. "Since its inception, Van Halen has written driving melodic rock songs performed in groundbreaking style."

During its more than three decades as a band, Van Halen has featured a number of different lineups and three different lead singers, and throughout has produced a string of multiplatinum albums that contained numerous No. 1 singles, including "Jump", "(Oh) Pretty Woman", "Why Can't This Be Love?", "Humans Being", "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Me Wise Magic". - Not too sure about the last two songs being No. 1's!?!

SARAYA PULL OUT OF FIREFEST

The folks at Firefest - Kieran Dargan and Bruce Mee - have just made this latest announcement, regarding the 2010 Firefest event:
'Firefest is extremely saddened that Sandi Saraya, despite making the commitment to perform at the show in December 2009 has chosen at relatively short notice to back track on her original decision. After a period of will she won't she, she finally asked for a totally inappropriate amount of money for herself personally to actually perform. Firefest had already went way beyond the original deal in an effort to make the Saraya show happen, offering much more financially than we had agreed. In fact the improved package we offered was over double what we had agreed from day 1 but apparently it was not enough. We have nothing but the highest regard and respect for Chuck Bonfante and Tony Bruno who went WAAAY above and beyond the call of duty in order to make this happen. The guys are extremely upset and annoyed that Sandi would choose to make this first time reunion about the almighty $, but sadly it appears this is the case. For the record Chuck, Tony and Barry at no stage asked for anything extra and were more than happy with the original agreement It is with great regret that we must inform you that Saraya will not be playing Firefest 2010 and a replacement act will be confirmed very shortly.'

Kieran, Bruce and the gang.

Then this also comes from the other Saraya band members:

'When Kieran Dargan first approached us with the idea of re-uniting after 20 years, we (the remaining band members) were all immediately on board. The question was whether or not Sandi, who now leads a very different and private life, would be into it. When she responded with an enthusiastic "definitely!" we were all surprised and delighted. However, nearly 8 months later and 3 months before the show it seems she requires a great deal of money to do this. This is not what Firefest is about, and neither Firefest or the remaining band members were willing to be put in such an unexpected and unpleasant position regarding the personal demands of our former singer. Sadly we will be unable to perform at Firefest and we would like to extend our deepest and most sincere apologies to the many fans travelling from all over the world to see us.'
Tony Bruno, Chuck Bonfante and Barry Dunaway

Frontiers announces catalogue reissues and some updates

Originally released in 2005, this is the album that re-sparkled the flame between the two artists and brought later two more albums and the original ASIA line-up reunion. This edition will see the addition of 5 bonus tracks: Heat of the Moment 05; Paradox/ Let Me Go (different version); The Smile Has Left Your Eyes 05; In The End (different version); There In Your Bed (which originally appeared on the “Heat of the Moment 05” EP). Details and samples available on www.frontiers.it/album/4740/

This reissue will include two bonus tracks: Push, Promises (both have originally appeared on the Japanese edition of the album). Details and samples available on www.frontiers.it/album/4741/

SEVENTH KEY “Seventh Key”, the debut album from the collaboration between KANSAS bassist Billy Greer and former CITY BOY guitar player Mike Slamer. Both have played together in STREETS, the band formed by Steve Walsh in his brief hiatus from Kansas from 1983 to 1986. This album includes some songs which were originally demoed for the KANSAS “Power” album and feature performances from Steve Morse, Phil Ehart, Steve Walsh and Rich Williams among others. This reissue adds two bonus tracks The Storm Rages On (original Japanese bonus track) and Remember You Well (US bonus track which was written by the other ex KANSAS, Kerry Livgren). Defined as “A brilliant album!” by http://www.melodicrock.com/ at the time of the release, this reissue comes with one bonus track “Love Train”. Details and samples available on www.frontiers.it/album/4743/

FIRST SIGNAL UPDATE

Some very positive press results are blessing the return of ex-HAREM SCAREM singer Harry Hess fronting FIRST SIGNAL, the new project produced by Dennis Ward of PINK CREAM 69. Some of the most remarkable ones include:
“FIRST SIGNAL is a well-constructed and melodic-as-hell album that welcomes Harry Hess and melodic rock fans with open arms.” Rockeyez

“If you dig Melodic Rock and the old Harem Scarem stuff then this album is something you will enjoy.” http://www.welovemetal.com/

“For die hard fans of Harem Scarem is First Signal featuring Harry Hess a good news show, its finger liking good” http://www.furyrocks.com/

“Simply put, First Signal is one of the contenders for being one of the best melodic rock albums of 2010”. http://www.ytsejam.com/

OUTLOUD UPDATE

The US-Greek Hard Rock unit OUTLOUD is working already on the follow up to their successful self titled debut release. RockpagesTV "invaded" Basement Studios were the band is working and talked with drummer Mark Cross and guitarist Bob Katsionis about the recording of their sophomore album, the differences with the first and Outloud's characteristics. You can read the entire interview at http://rockpages.gr/ or enjoy the interview clicking here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eGfVyKxQGk

THE MURDER OF MY SWEET UPDATE

The very well known Japanese actor/singer Anna Tsuchiya will use the original THE MURDER OF MY SWEET song "Follow The Rain" (titled "Shout In The Rain" in her version) as the lead off single from her third album released in Japan on Avex. The song in this new version can be enjoyed in this attractive videoclip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDHJzu5uuNw

It’s very rare that a Japanese artist decides to cut a single with an already available song - but Avex and Anna T loved the track very much and the band feels honoured by their choice. THE MURDER OF MY SWEET are scheduled to appear live at the forthcoming Raismes Festival in France on September 11th.

Rik Emmett newsletter update

Here’s the latest newsletter update from the Rik Emmett camp:

Hi folks:

Seems like every time I get around to writing one of these newsletter intros, I say I'm emerging from a crazy hectic busy time. Story of a modern musician's life, I guess ...

Let's see: a week immersed in the Songstudio workshop at Ryerson was great fun: not only did I run workshop classes every morning, I got to accompany Jim Vallance one night, singing & playing Bryan Adams hits, and played over 4 hours backing up students on the night of Thursday the 22nd (try that some time: almost 30 songs that my bandmates and I had never heard before! - talk about flying by the seat of your pants), and ended the week by going out to a birthday party for my old friend Ian Thomas, where we sat around a campfire and played his great songs, some old Beatles songs and stuff from the '60's.

Then I went with the quartet down to Sarnia and rocked through an outdoor show there on the night of the 24th. Yahooooo. (I got a new Line 6 Wireless system for big stages, and with my trusty Les Paul and Vox pedalboard, I am one easy-to-please, happy dude ... ) It got even better in Lockport NY on July 30. HUGE crowd - biggest 'Magic Power' singalong in years.

For those who sent 57th birthday wishes and 34th anniversary congrats, thanks and thanks again. We were having a great time down Cape Breton way, after playing the Stan Rogers Festival in Canso July 3 & 4. On our anniversary night, we were staying in an amazing old B & B in Guysborough - DesBarres Manor Inn - http://www.desbarresmanor.com/ ; - and our room actually had Rob & Laura Petrie separate beds! But it was an amazing holiday: we actually were out on a whale-watching expedition at one point, north from Cheticamp, and the tour guide brought us in close to the mountainous rocky shoreline and pointed out a big brown bear way up on the hillside, foraging about. The bear took one look at us, and decided it didn't want anything to do with a bunch of humans wearing life jackets, floating down there in the ocean - so it went scrambling back up the mountainside. But that was a very cool moment - seeing a live wild bear, moments before & after watching pilot whales gently surfacing & clearing their blow-holes. That boat ride home (in a Zodiac - essentially a super-motorized inflatable raft, ripping along the tops of the waves at over 30 knots an hour) was exhilarating. It made me very thirsty for a pint of Moosehead.

Rock News for Wednesday 4th August, 2010

STYX SET TO LAUNCH “THE GRAND ILLUSION/PIECES OF EIGHT” TOUR THIS FALL, PERFORMING BOTH ALBUMS IN THEIR ENTIRETY!
SEVEN-SONG EP OF RE-RECORDED CLASSICS AND ONE BRAND NEW TRACK FOR SALE AT EVERY SHOW

August 4, 2010 -- It’s the tour STYX fans have been waiting for.
STYX--Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitars), James “JY” Young (vocals, guitars), Lawrence Gowan (vocals, keyboards), Todd Sucherman (drums) and Ricky Phillips (bass), along with the occasional surprise appearance by original bassist Chuck Panozzo — are getting ready to head out on the U.S. concert trail again this year. However, for this round of dates, the band has an extra-special treat planned - it won’t be a typical STYX show. Along with the classic hits, the band will be performing 1977's THE GRAND ILLUSION and 1978's PIECES OF EIGHT in their entirety.
Both albums spawned such hit singles and Classic Rock radio standards as "Come Sail Away," "Renegade," "Blue Collar Man" and "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man).”

And as icing on the cake, a seven-song EP, entitled REGENERATION, VOLUME 1, containing six newly re-recorded classics--"Come Sail Away,” "Crystal Ball," "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man),” “Lorelei,” “The Grand Illusion” and “Sing For The Day” — and a brand new track, “Difference In The World,” will be available for sale at every stop along “The Grand Illusion/Pieces Of Eight” October/November tour route.

“This is the most unique STYX concert ever,” says singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw. “It's a hybrid experience of enjoying the artistry of the vinyl album and the energy and of our live performance. Some songs have never been performed live!”

Spawned from a suburban Chicago basement in the early ‘70s, STYX would eventually transform into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late '70s and early '80s, due to a fondness for big rockers and soaring power ballads. Over the course of their 38-year career they’ve released 15 studio albums, 6 best-of compilations and 4 live albums, garnering 8 Top Ten singles. STYX has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

On the touring front, STYX has performed more shows since ’99 than all of the previous years of its career combined. Two Super-Bowl appearances, Pollstar box office chart-topping tours with Def Leppard, Journey, Boston, REO Speedwagon, Bad Company, Foreigner (to name a few), two more studio albums and no end in sight, STYX continues to conquer the planet, one venue at a time.

Check out the “The Grand Illusion/Pieces Of Eight” at any of the following stops:

FORTHCOMING QUIET RIOT DOCUMENTARY TO GO BEHIND THE SCENES CIRCA CRAZED 'METAL HEALTH' ERA - FANS ASKED TO HELP RAISE FUNDS

Without a doubt, THE heavy metal success story of the early '80s was none other than Quiet Riot. After years of struggling in LA clubs (despite legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads being in their ranks throughout the '70s), the classic QR line-up of Kevin DuBrow (vocals), Frankie Banali (drums), Rudy Sarzo (bass), and Carlos Cavazo (guitar) hit mega-success with their first-ever US release in 1983, the classic 'Metal Health.' Spawning two hit singles that have gone on to become synonymous with heavy metal - "Cum On Feel the Noize" and "Metal Health" - the 'Metal Health' album went on to become the first-ever metal US debut to hit the #1 spot on the Billboard album charts, and resulted in a solid year of sold-out shows and non-stop MTV video airplay.

Despite this being an absolute standout era of the band's career, very little substantial video documentation has surfaced. That is ... until now. Banali is in the midst of constructing a full-length/behind-the-scenes/warts-and-all documentary about the group (the first-ever solely about QR), which will focus on this aforementioned era, but also, recount QR's entire story - from the first time DuBrow and Banali crossed paths in January 1980, through DuBrow's untimely passing in November of 2007.

The video footage - directly from Banali's archives - will include the aforementioned performance in 1980 through some of the last shows QR played, including footage of their Rocklahoma performance in 2007. Additional video footage captures QR in many phases, including a 1982 performance of "DuBrow" (a short-lived name Quiet Riot went by in the early '80s), with DuBrow, Banali, bassist Chuck Wright (Sarzo was playing in Ozzy Osbourne's band at the time), and Cavazo's first video performance with the band, his second total. Also included will be live performances, backstage footage, sound checks, studio sessions, and interviews - most of which has never been seen.

Banali has already invested money into the project, and to make the documentary reach its full potential, he is having an online fundraiser that ends September 2nd. Fans are being called upon to help back the project, and lend a hand in its completion. Also via the aforementioned link is a list of the different increments you can pledge - all of which give rewards of QR-related merchandise, and as the pledge amount increases, so do the rewards (including such simply awesome items as an autographed QR photo that includes the late DuBrow's signature, a personal drum lesson with Banali in LA, dinner with Banali at the Rainbow in LA, your own personalized 'Metal Health' platinum CD award, your name in the film's credits, amongst many other cool opportunities).

As Banali says, "The moment my friend Kevin DuBrow died, my life and career went from sixty to zero with his final breath." But now, DuBrow and Quiet Riot will receive a much-deserved video retrospective, that will leave no stone unturned. Get ready to bang your head and feel the noize once more!

The first stages of putting the documentary together are now underway, and a "teaser" clip of what to expect has been posted via this link http://kck.st/9TXAiA

Glasgow-Based Rockers, LOGAN, Prepare to Unleash ‘THE GREAT UNKNOWN’ October 5th, 2010

Producer Keith Olsen certainly has a knack for spotting talent - over the years he has overseen the creation of some truly mammoth rock records - namely Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘No Rest for the Wicked’, Whitesnake’s ‘Slide It In’, and the Scorpions’ ‘Crazy World’.
Logan is in some splendid company with Olsen at the helm of the group’s first world wide release, ‘The Great Unknown.’

‘The Great Unknown’ - available on October 5th, 2010 - will be the first Logan recording to receive a major push Stateside. It will be released on Guardian Angel in conjunction with Mesa Bluemoon through Universal. The group - Kenny Collins (vocals), Al Reilly (lead guitar), Mick Coll (rhythm guitar), Steve Reilly (bass), and Iain Stratton (drums) - is already a major player in Europe. Case in point, they have opened up stadium gigs for Bon Jovi and toured alongside the likes of Alter Bridge and Hinder. In fact, Logan left Alter Bridge vocalist (and current frontman of Slash’s solo band), Miles Kennedy quite impressed, as evidenced by his quote, “They drank Central Europe dry of vodka."

Accolades continuously pour in about this fast-rising band - including praise from such respected publications as Guitarist Magazine ("If Logan are taken on by a US label and producer, they could go a long way") and Classic Rock Magazine ("Anthemic, stadium filling sound"). Their instantly memorable tracks as “Hallowed Ground,” “Jump in Again,” and “Rock & Roll Way” are ready to take radio by storm - it appears to be only a matter of time until America catches up with the rest of the world, and falls under the hard rockin’ spell of Logan and ‘The Great Unknown.’

Y & T update via their newsletter

As fans in Oregon, Washington, and Colorado witnessed at the recent Y&T shows, the band has been kicking serious butt on this summer's Facemelter tour. Even though Phil (Kennemore - Bass) was experiencing severe back pain ever since the June European tour, he soldiered on and played the shows anyway. Now, with much regret, Phil's doctors have ordered him off the tour to get the treatment he needs to move forward.

Extremely proud of the new Facemelter album, and the work that he, Dave, John, and Mike have done, Phil insisted the tour continue. So to honor his wish, we flew in a bass player to sub for Phil until he is able to return. As the band's manager Jill Meniketti, posted on the web site discussion forum about these recent events, Phil says: "On with the show."

The guys are so sorry that they had to cancel the show in Springfield, IL, but Phil was receiving local treatment and tests in St. Louis and the band was unable to continue until that important business was finished. With less than 24-hour's notice, Brad Lang (of Jet Red fame, War & Peace, and Foreigner) was gracious enough to step up to fill in on bass for the time being to help out the band and keep the tour continuing. He's extremely proud and excited to be playing with Y&T and helping out for Phil. Brad's doing a great job of representing the Y&T live experience. We want to thank you all for giving him the warm welcome he's received on the shows he's played so far.

For the record, Y&T has only cancelled one show on this US tour -- Springfield, IL -- and that one cancellation was due to Phil's medical needs. Any other shows that have been cancelled or changed or moved in any way are the fault of the agent and/or local promoter for that particular original show.

We hope all of you fans who live near where Y&T is playing the next few weeks will come out to support the band, as they play the classics, as well as songs from the new Facemelter CD.

Y&T DOES DALLAS!
The Fort Worth show has moved to Trees in Dallas, TX. So come on down and have your facemelted.

Pretty Maids – Pandemonium review

Pretty Maids – Pandemonium CD review
(Released on Frontiers records - June 2010)

Danish rockers Pretty Maids return with their latest album to date, Pandemonium their last being ‘Wake up To the Real World’ in 2006.

For those who don’t know, the band has actually been around since 1981, yes that long, although they didn’t release their first album until 1984, with ‘Red Hot and Heavy.’
You see my problem with the band – possibly many other rock fans too. – is that often it seems like they have an identity crisis!

Now don’t get me wrong, as I certainly recognize the bands talents, but if I was to say to you imagine the pomp prog sound of say Asia, then the hooks of say Europe and finally the aggression of say Metallica and that’s to me somewhere about where the band is at!

This new album opens with the title track, with an intro piece of US President Obama during a news conference, leading you into the Pandemonium direction, statement wise, before the music then kicks in.

It’s a very powerful start to an album musically and that part I love, but the vocals during the verse …, hmmm … To me, with the music, this isn’t quite right with the aggressive snarl, but then the chorus hits melody and all is well again. That was my assessment upon my first few plays, but …. I’ve since grown to accept it, but after giving the CD some time away from plays.

‘I.N.V.U.’ - What?! Oh OK, I get it … Doh! Spell it out again … - next and I like this track, I really do, after growing from the darkness, it just grows with some great hooklines, but it’s Ronnie Atkins voice that really gets me, so changeable in so many different ways. Very interesting. Dark and grungy one minute then totally melodic the next …

Talk about going completely left field with ‘Little Drops of Heaven’ to the pop level almost, not in a power ballad way either as after a poppy start / intro, it simply builds to a huge powerful chorus and this grows and is getting the band a lot of attention too.

Next up it sounds like an Asia track, before crunching power chords in ‘One World One Truth’ and for a moment Atkins almost sounds like Magnums Bob Catley! It’s a strong heavy yet melodic song.

‘Final Day of Innocence’ is again heavy with plenty of melody present. Musically it’s similar to say Nickelback latest sound ala Mutt Lange, but perhaps a little more melodic. Love the way they blend atmospheric keyboards with heavy guitars.

Next there’s no messing with the riffing intro of ‘Cielo Drive’ and it’s just plowing through as the song just totally drives and as heavy as these guys sound, it’s still melodic. There’s an erie radio type broadcast mid way through before searing guitar solo that cruises. Atkins voice at time for me is almost too much growl in that seriously metalic vein, but it just works here somehow.

‘It Comes At Night’ certainly echoes say Megadeth / Metallica as it starts, but in the pre-chorus the melody kicks in briefly while the chorus is a growler and then midway through the song, it eases right down to a quiet simply piano and vocal piece. Clever. Then it becomes a strong melodic piece backing the solo, before the aggressive verse returns. Wow! Quite a track.
With ‘Old Enough To Know’ it’s melodic from the start and right through, as the ballad of the album rears it’s head beautifully. It really is a great track, maybe too mellow for many Pretty Maids die hards, but it’s class to me.

Next up is ‘Beautiful Madness’ which is almost a chug along easy going rocker, with the melodic keyboard overtones keeping it’s melodic edge, but again the variety in how Atkins phrases each song in a different way makes it intriguing.

‘Breathless’ is so commercial, it should be a huge hit and I’m surprised it’s not being played on every radio station …, everywhere! It’s almost classic Def Leppard territory meet the most commercial side of Guns ‘n’ Roses, but it’s so good in it’s own right, that I shouldn’t need to draw comparisons.

Closing track here is … – again? - ‘It Comes’ … Yes really … It was track number seven and then here at number 11 it’s back again. With a more atmospheric intro this time though. The remix?

It’s funny to hear the metallic baseline to some of these songs, particulary this one, with some of the swirling and stabbing keyboards that support the metal song structure and this is what makes the album such an interesting mix.
The thing is, maybe this is what has confused a lot of rock fans to maybe not take Pretty Maids 100% to their hearts so to speak.

There’s clearly a lot to be enjoyed here and at first I’ll admit, it wasn’t grabbing me, but with time it really is an album that has won me over.

Billed as “the most powerful rock film ever made,” Ladies & Gentlemen was filmed over the course of four nights in Texas during the “Exile on Main Street” tour in 1972.
